Looking to connect with someone that has an at home FFL, I would like to start the process in getting my own. I do not have any zoning issues, willing to pay good money for someone to guide me through the process who has experience.

Too much conflicting information online, would rather go straight to the source.

Thanks all.

If you are in Charlotte, you will likely have issues with zoning.

If you really don’t have any zoning issues, then decide if you are going to do this as a sole proprietor or as an LLC/corporation. If the latter, file the necessary paperwork to get your company started, then get the zoning/use permit you need. If the former, get the zoning/use permit you need to run the business out of your house. If you are going to run the business under a DBA name, you will need to register that name at the register of deeds office. Then fill out the application and send it in to ATF. Chances are you will have no problems.

Heck, I’d call the Charlotte ATF office and ask to speak to someone about what you need to do to make the application process as easy as possible. Believe it or not, they are very helpful with this. Be prepared to take notes, but the process is actually fairly simple. The zoning issue will likely be your biggest hurdle.

I only know of one house ffl. It is in Myrtle Beach. The individual has lots of money and connections. The only way I know of for a person inside the city limits. I don’t think it’s much better anywhere else. Good luck and hope you succeed as I can remember when everyone had one.

Edited to add - not picking on @Walkabout Dan - just adding NC context. I’m very familiar with this subject.

Depends entirely on local zoning laws. Myrtle Beach might be nearly impossible, but lots of towns and counties have no problem with them. There are a metric ton of home based FFLs in NC. I know a lot of them and there are way more I don’t know. I was just at an ATF dealer seminar and there were a bunch of home based guys and gals there. Right now is the easiest time to get a home based FFL since the Clinton era.

Thanks for that information. Being new into NC I did not realize that. Had one 40 years ago. I may look into it again.

The first FFL that I went to in NC is in north Charlotte. A former police officer working out of his converted detached garage. I don't know about the zoning of his area though.

What comes to mind is things like the home based business ordinance that we have here in Chatham county where you’re not allowed to have a sign except, so big, and you can’t use an out building beyond X sq feet and a few other things. Stuff pretty much to ensure you remain low profile and not something one would find in a commercial district.

I know the guy you’re talking about. I used him when I was in the area. Nice guy.

I think he has closed up shop.

I've had an at home FFL for 13 years now. Until about 6 years ago when I moved to my current location, I actually ran it out of my house. I now run it out of a separate building on my property.

Happy to answer any questions you may have. I'm sure the process has changed since I filed my original FFL application.

My local dealer is a SOT and he's got multiple windows at his place?

Thats a show window like a display window, hence why it references salesroom. You can have a sot in a building with 10 windows lmao.

I called the atf and spoke with them about it.

The below sounds like it was written in 1951, pre-WFH , Ebay sales etc.

Again I'm speaking from my own current experience. As I am currently applying for my FFL.

My local ordinance would not allow more than one window in the facility for any manufacturing license. I am in Randolph county. If someone else in Randolph county can tell me if that is wrong then I'd love that because it would resolve an issue I have.
