The house I grew up in had these joints.
Lead and oakum. My old house, built 1930 had that. Cast iron waste lines and main stack.

Softened a lot of it with a MAPP gas torch. Toilet waste line and drain from sink in the 2nd floor bathroom were lead.

Had galvanized pipe for water lines
 
I live in my Grandparents house from age six till seventeen. Lead pipes incoming water, cast iron on the out. Built about 1840.
 
Some areas, like NYC still use lead and oakum.

Still taught in trade schools. The skill comes in when you pour it into a horizontal joint without lead pouring out the bottom.
