Looking for any knowledge/experiences with the Savage Axis line of bolt action rifles. How well do they shoot ? Do you prefer the wood stock or the synthetic stock ? I'm mainly looking at these for deer hunting. I'm pretty set on what caliber (.270 Win). Other recommendations for a $600 or less hunting rifle. The longest distance i could shoot on my hunting land is 250yds, but most of our stands overlook clearings with around 100 yard or less shots. Thanks

I have a Savage Axis in 223, the original without the accu-trigger. I got it a while back for $300 and a $100 rebate, couldn't pass that up. The Axis is a fine deer rifle and the 270 is a proven deer killing caliber. Nothing wrong with the 6.5CM but in my opinion it's highly overrated.
Don't be scared off by the original Axis trigger if you find one, a simple modification makes it a really nice trigger but the accu-trigger is nice also.
The Axis isn't a long range target rifle but with a decent scope it's good enough to shoot deer at up to 200 plus yards depending on ammo and the ability of the shooter.
