I thought we could set up a list of suggested local area repeaters by area. Sure we can go to RepeaterBook and look up all the repeaters, but I was thinking more of a shorter listing of preferred or dominant repeaters by people in that area.
I'm currently re-programing a new HT and was thinking, while I know the hot repeaters in my area, I don't know the hot repeaters in say, Raleigh or Greensboro. It would be handy to have some pre-programed into the radio so that if I find myself in an area, I know what repeater to hit up without having to look it up and program on the fly. I'm thinking it would only be just a few, like 2 or 3 in a given area. You can copy the data right out of the RepeaterBook listing with a comment or 2. It's also intresting to note there are link systems such as PCRN in NC and SCHEART in SC.

For example...

Charlotte Area

W4CQ club repeater at 1800ft AGL in Dallas,NC (My old club.)
444.4500+5 MHz82.5 / 82.5 DallasGastonW4CQOPENFM

W4BFB club repeater. Skywarn.
145.2300-0.6 MHz118.8 / 118.8 Ranlo, Spencer MountainGastonW4BFBOPENFM EchoLink

You missed the point. I referenced Repeater Book in my post.

The point is that you can bury yourself in repeater listings, but what do the locals mostly use and which are the "ok its a repeater but no one is ever on it." If I want to pre-program my radio but don't have 500 memory slots, what are the one or two preferred repeaters in an area?

ETA - The two repeaters I listed as examples are dominant in the Charlotte area. But, but they don't show up in the Charlotte repeater book list, because they are actually located in Dallas, NC and Ranlo, NC. But, they cover Charlotte.

This is where community info trumps online info.

In the triad, 145.150 and 145.250, W4GSO and W4GG were the go to repeaters when I lived in the Triad. After some political fallout, of which I was a part, a lot of folks moved to “The Madison” repeater 147.345 which supposedly has echolink under w4ayo. I moved away a couple of years ago, so my information is dated. The W4GG repeater was on the WFMY tower but had technical issues. W4GSO was on a Greensboro city tower, and while not high, had great Coverage.

I am in Chatham now, and things are in flux. The county borrowed a couple of repeaters from Orange County (w4unc), one was in Siler City and one in Pittsboro, but the later was taken down (planned) but may come back up. Right now, I think the 4473.475 w4unc is probably the best bet. @mostly22lately could probably comment or confirm.

The guides are just starting points, an easy way to find out, just ask how the coverage is on a particular repeater. Repeaters come and go or are offline for repairs.
146.52 is also a good start for local info.

Yes PCRN is very good, you can hit their 146.88 82.5 that is on the WRAL TV tower 1,200' up, just south of Raleigh, in NC from the VA and SC borders with mobile radio.

I find checking club websites a good resource for repeater info.

Reactions: Me.
I find WA1WXL on 444.950+ 136.5 to be one of the best kept secrets in the Charlotte area,

The tower is at I-77/Clanton Rd. Huge footprint.

K4ITL ... 145.210 (82.5 PL) is one of the busiest repeaters in the triangle. While I rarely use it, I know it's pretty active.

W4gso 145.150 Greensboro, w4tnc 441.800 Thomasville, k4gw 147.315 and w4nc 145.470 sauratown mtn. Those cover the triad pretty good and are fairly busy.
