I’m a bourbon guy. I generally know what I’m looking at in the bourbon aisle. I thought vodka was potato whiskey only good for screwdrivers, bloody mary’s, and Russian mobsters. I just today found out I have been wrong all these years! While I do like a good Bloody Mary, I am trying vodka straight but chilled over whiskey stones. I have a bottle of Stolichnaya
already and it’s okay but I just picked up a couple of samples of Tito’s and a small Grey Goose. The Tito’s is better than the Stoli straight but I have not sampled the Grey Goose yet. What are your favorites in the vodka realm and how do you like it? What are some other recommendations that might be available at my local ABC store?

I did some research on this not long ago and searched up the post. Couple good lists linked here.

both the Reyka and Chopin have had high marks in the household, as well as Hanger 1 and Elit (pretty tall bottle, think it’s a premium sub brand from absolut). Have found all of these at NC abc and pretty reasonably priced. Tito’s is go to for mixing, these are used to drink straight, usually keep in the freezer.

My FiL was a vodka guy. He liked Stoli, then moved on to Grey Goose. He ended up with Titos and stayed there because of cost/value trade off. I can't find anything to complain about with Titos either.

My local ABC is not well stocked. I will have to try the one over in Pinehurst on Rte 5. They usually have a good bourbon selection, we’ll see what their vodka looks like.

Most of my Vodka goes in with other ingredients so Stoli is fine (Bloody Mary’s in the morning, White Russians after dinner).

I will step up to Ketel One or Grey Goose when I have martinis, but even then I normally get them dirty).

I know someone out there in Google world has probably done a blind taste test, but it’s not that important to me to search for it.

Tito's for me. Usually with a little Sprite or a lemon-lime tonic.

Finished the rest of the Tito's at the hotel bar a few weeks ago and all they had left was Grey Goose so I had them crack the seal on that. I think it was good but I was on my 4th double so....

When I thought I’d become more sophisticated and less of a beer glutton, I was drinking Dixie vodka, made in Charleston, SC. It was pretty equal to Tito’s, and local. But I soon learned if you drink vodka like you would a 12 pack of Coors Lite, your head would feel like you’ve been hit top dead center with a sword or an axe, no matter the brand.

I used to drink silver tree vodka in CO. I recently bought blue shark vodka (NC) and like it.

I cannot get it anymore but think it is available in SC and maybe NC, Ultimate Vodka. It is in a really nice looking blue bottle. The best vodka that In found to drink straight.

Luksusowa

It's a Polish potato vodka that beats the crap out of the competition at a fraction of the price.

I used to jam on a double grey goose on the rocks, with like 3 lemon wedges..gotta squeeze the juice and then stir it in.. so good.

Titos is also good.

Any recommendations for a worthy ice cube? Any particular water? Do you double boil before freezing?

I'd like to give vodka over ice a try (gifted bottle), but not sure about using our tap water since we utilize a water softener (our well water is quite hard coming out from the well --- so much so I don't know how the previous owners managed without the softener). Anyway, our tap water is going to have a fair amount of Na^1+ (sodium ions) in it from the softener.

I'm sure straight would be an option too.

I'd go buy a bag of ice if it's really important to have clear water. Other option is buy a bottle of fancy water and freeze up a tray.

I don't drink. But I had my family try many of the NC Distillery vodkas.
I forget the brand, but one was a sweet potato vodka. Got very good reviews from the family.

If you can find it, some stores carry it, some don’t, my hands down favorite is Russian Standard. Tried it after a review put it as the best tasting moderately priced vodka.

I tried that one recently and I prefer Stoli to it.

Have we hit any actual Russian Vodka yet?
Russian Standard is old stock from before the war with Ukraine that apparently NC has decided to sell in its ABC stores. That’s what I was told locally.

They removed it from the shelves alleging support for the Ukes. The stock had been bought and paid for, so only the stores suffered. I hope they’re able to get new stock. Pure stupidity to think they’re hurting Putin by not buying it. At most the ones who pay the price are the customers here and the workers there, just the little people.

19 out of 20 brands at the ABC store weren't Russian to begin with. I looked up Russian brands and my store had none of them even before the war. So all those people boycotting Vodka should look at where it's actually made...

That’s true, which is why they kept Stoli on the shelf. I believe it’s from Latvia. Russian Standard is from St. Petersburg.

I used to get this in GA but have not seen it in the state in 15+ years. I hear that SC has it. Utlimat Vodka. Comes in a pretty blue bottle that lives in the freezer. I was turned on to it when I order a Grey Goose and the bartender asked if I wanted something better than GG. From that point on, when I drink vodka strait, it is Ultimat Vodka.Ultimat Vodka.jpg
