Another cutting board.

Had some strips left over from the first one so I thought I would make a second board. Here is a shot of the untreated board.

Here is what it looks like after the first coat of oil.

We used to make cutting boards in shop class, among other things. I had forgotten about those.

When I did mine, I cut a bunch of strips, glued them together with elmers(we ate it as kids so it’s fine now right?) , ran it though a planer, then sanded the hell out of it. I put little cherry dowel pins in the sides of mine so it looks doweled together.

Strips are run thru a jointer and then glued and clamped together. After 24 hrs on this one I used a hand plane to even up both sides and then a random orbit sander starting with 80 grit and moved up to 220 grit. Round over bit in the router table on the bottom and a cove bit on the top. I used a roman ogee bit on top of the first one.

Very nice.

Cutting boards and checker/chess boards. There's no shop class anymore. Mine was in junior high.

I was the teacher’s assistant in ninth grade after taking shop in 7th and 8th, and we had a great wood shop. I ran the lacquer spray booth for all the student’s projects.

I loved that class, and had a great teacher.

More good-lookin' work! excellent plan - now you can smoke twice the meat.

My shop class was also in jr high. We had 4 classes in 4 quarters: Electric, Drawing, Wood, and Metal.

We were given a choice of projects in Wood & Metal shop. I made a set of S&P shakers out of walnut & maple; dunno what became of them.

In metal shop, we collected aluminum cans, melted 'em down, and I made a sand casting. Another option was gardening tools, andirons, a dustpan made of sheet metal, forged shafts, and cast aluminum handles.

Can't imagine the administration's response today if a 12-year old walked into school with a sackful of Dad's beer cans...

Here is a shot as I was applying the conditioner and after 3 coats of the oil. I stopped just shy of one end to show the difference the conditioner makes.



Here is another shot moving over just a little. It shows the same light on the surface but where the conditioner is.
