My shop class was also in jr high. We had 4 classes in 4 quarters: Electric, Drawing, Wood, and Metal.
We were given a choice of projects in Wood & Metal shop. I made a set of S&P shakers out of walnut & maple; dunno what became of them.
In metal shop, we collected aluminum cans, melted 'em down, and I made a sand casting. Another option was gardening tools, andirons, a dustpan made of sheet metal, forged shafts, and cast aluminum handles.
Can't imagine the administration's response today if a 12-year old walked into school with a sackful of Dad's beer cans...
