Sheriff Baker,

You have violated your oath of office and the US Constitution when you refused to issue gun permits during the Corona Virus outbreak in Wake County. The 2nd Amendment is needed now more than ever. It is not a privilege you get to suspend to gain political points—it is a right.

You need to resign immediately and allow a Patriot who will honor the Constitution & his oath and serve his citizens in their time of need.

Sincerely,

Appreciate the link - thanks! I'll be sending my own carefuly-crafted love note!

Honorable Sheriff Baker-

I realize that your resources are stretched thin during this crisis. Nevertheless, everyone in an essential business is stretched thin, including my wife who works in healthcare and an immediate family member who is employed by an upstanding local gun shop and working long hours due to Wake county citizens seeking to defend themselves. Even the state of Illinois of all places has declared gun shops to be an essential business.

By stopping the continued acceptance of applications for pistol purchase permits, and CHP renewals you unfairly and unconstitutionally restrict the exercise of a natural right that is preserved and protected by the Constitution of the United States, for which you have a sacred duty to defend for all of the citizens of Wake county in order that they may defend themselves at a time when your stretched resources may not be able to.

Please reconsider your position.

Respectfully,

Very well put. Thanks for posting.

There is nothing honorable about that a$$hat.

If my Durham CHP meeting gets canceled I will be writing similar, with offer to donate Lysol wipes to clean the scanner between prospective permittee rotations. I think basic tube is 35 wipes. That’s at least 3 days worth of people.

Hey Sheriff.

Stop the issuance of permits all together.

Do the constitutionaly correct thing and do away with them.

We should be able to but guns no different than we do food or other staples.

Wake county sheriff's office has 11 employees exhibiting flu-like symptoms and are being told to self-isolate.
The people affected are five deputies, five detention officers and one 911 operator.

I don't care when it comes to the permit question. Unless the state is going to suspend permit requirements, they need to be processing them - FAST. Besides, how many employees do they have? How many get the flu in a given year? None of the 11 may have the Wuhan virus. If it were simple flu season, it would be business as usual with those 11 out on sick leave.

Hey, I just post the news.
I also wrote him a handsome letter earlier, suitable for framing.

At first I misread that the N&O staff posted this, but it is from a resident of Chapel Hill. Not sure which is weirder.

Regarding “Wake County sheriff suspends pistol, concealed-carry permit applications as demand surges,” (March 24):

Wake sheriff should not have suspended pistol permit applications amid coronavirus
During a crisis there should be no doubt about our ability to protect and defend ourselves and our loved ones, yet Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker has taken action that could leave law-abiding citizens defenseless.

His office announced it will not issue new pistol purchase permits until at least April 30.

While he may be justifiably concerned about the spread of coronavirus, there are laws to prevent state and local officials from using the exercise of their “emergency powers” as a pretext to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms. North Carolina law requires sheriffs to approve or reject a pistol permit with 14 days. Even in the absence of such laws, the Second Amendment still applies by its own force.

IMO...you are just wasting electrons. Remember in November.
Never say never. I have gotten the IRS to do things I never thought I could. Maybe just a flash in the pan for me, but if I have the time I’ll make the effort.

Well, usually. I don’t like sending cut and paste letters.

I get that we're against restricting access to guns, but why do we care about this right now?

No one is having their right to arm themselves restricted. Buy a shotgun.

There are all manner of unusual restrictions happening right now. Why plant our flag on this hill?

You can’t conceal a shotgun and carry it with you while pumping gas, walking across the parking lot into the grocery store, pharmacy, etc.

LEO departments have officers out sick, they are stretched thin, and even less able to answer calls.

Crime increases when the goods and services that can normally be had all of sudden become un-available. There is never a more important time for citizens to be able to defend themselves.

Just want to add:

And government encroachment of civil liberties (e.g. the 1st amendment) is incrementally increasing all in the name of public safety and "for your own good." The 2nd amendment "hill" is the view and the high ground from which all the others are protected.

That's what this is all about, Charlie Brown.

Then you don’t have the right shotgun.

Or you just refuse to wear a duster year ‘round. :p

I know Cathy Wright and her husband, John. Cathy is a huge 2nd Amendment advocate living in Chapel Hill. Seems weird, maybe. But she lives among a big group of hunters, shooters and other 2nd Amendment supporters.
