Looking at SWFA fixed glass. They offer a few options in side focus for an extra $100. Is it worth the upgrade? What say you who have messed with both?

Edit: I'm looking at the 10x42 fixed. The HD model that's $500 more is only available in rear focus. That makes me wonder if side focus is better or just a preference?

I don't think there is a difference in performance, it's just easier to reach the side focus knob. If you're going to be shooting at different distances often it's probably worth it to go with the side focus.

This would be for a 308 hunting rifle... So range will definitely vary...

Oops, I may have misread. I don't know much about rear focus, assuming we are talking about parallax adjustment and not ocular adjustment. I was thinking the choice was between front (objective) focus adjustment and side focus adjustment. My bad. :(

I see, rear focus looks like something that they can do on fixed power scopes only because it takes the place of a magnification ring. Sorry, don't have any experience with it but since it does the same thing I'd just assume it's again just up to which is more comfortable for you.

Never owned a fixed power either. The near mythical respect folks seem to have for these on medium to long range builds has me looking at them for a budget bolt gun build...

Side is easier in those. It’d be like turning a very very tight magnification ring on the eyepiece of a zoomy scope. Doable by all means, but the side would be easier. Maybe one of those add on levers would help some. I have several of the rear focus models.

I'll second that ^

P - If you want to borrow one to see if you like it, I've got a spare. If you want to wait till the bbq I'll bring it with me.
