Been thinking about picking one of these up (replica but a shooter). I was looking at the Uberti or the Pietta. Caliber would either be .36 or 44 it don’t matter to me. I was thinking I want an all steel frame. I read that the brass frames stretch over time when shooting a lot. Don’t know how true that is. But I do love the look of the stainless models. Pros cons. Who has them

I think you will like the Ubertis better; I have one. Are you looking for cap and ball, or do you plan to shoot cartridges? I enjoy shooting BP muzzleloaders but for revolvers I prefer cartridges. Mine was a .36 cal 7.5" percussion converted to .38 spl cowboy loads with a Howell conversion cylinder; the barrel was lined to .357, aligned to the new cylinder and shortened to 5.5" by Kenny Howell. The 1851 Navy has a slightly smaller grip than the 1860 Army. With the shorter barrel, it doesn't feel muzzle-heavy and makes a really handy shooter. If you have big mitts you may prefer the Army model.

I will start out shooting cap and ball and maybe get a conversion kit. My hands are long and skinny. I always like the feel of the Ruger blackhawks. May have to put my hands on a few of them first

If you can find a Ruger Old Army at a reasonable price (ha!) I think you would like it a lot, especially in stainless. If you want a big 'un I have a nice Uberti Walker Colt .44 (cap & ball) I'd part with - it's a 4.5 lb honkin' big handful. PM if interested.

My brother actually has a .530 ruger old army our dad gave him. He has not shot it yet. Pm inbound.

Ruger Old Armys are fantastic! They use 0.457" ball. Did someone ream & rebore yer father's ROA to 0.530"?

Before you settle one the 1851, try a Remington 1860. One of those with a couple of spare cylinders is a formidable weapon. The 1851 doesn't benefit from carrying spare cylinders, because the entyre pistol has to come apart, just to change the cylinder. Not so with the Remington 1860.

not that I know of. I have not seen it. My brother says the balls are.530. Could of been picked up from something else. I am hoping to go see it and see what it actually is.
