With the battle between Russia and Saudi Arabia, we’ve seen petroleum prices dive. This translates into gas under $2 and I believe I saw diesel at $2.05 the other day. Meanwhile, my propane supplier just charged me $3.10/gallon plus tax and a $12 Compliance Fee. Considering the cheap raw material, $3.10 seems really high to me.

What are you paying for home delivery of propane?

I think it was in that ballpark last time I had gas delivered. Given the cost of delivery, Its almost cheaper to go buy it at Tractor Supply in your own tanks.

better off burning diesel to make electricity and using that for whatever. I vetoed the gas in our new house. I can't make propane or natural gas on my own.

$2.39/gal and a $7 Haxmat Fee Delivered this past week.

Eat more beans.

I paid $2.08 last month for propane. I may need one more fill up before the warm weather gets here, so I hope it has not gone up that much. Gas was down to $1.79 to $1.89 around here for regular.

This.

You can negotiate prices with propane. You'll get the best price if you pre buy

The company I deal with even has an option for those who can't pay up front for a whole winters worth of gas to lock the price in at what ever the going rate is at the first of the season by paying a $50 fee. After that they bring it when you need it and still pay the locked in price.

That’s what I thought.
I'm in SC and we automatically send $50 a week to them. They come whenever we call or they estimate when we should be getting low and call us. We were at 40%, but we asked them to top off due to the current circumstances. We have 3 people classified as disabled in our house and we are at the top of their priority list.

We normally get 4 fill ups per cold season. When I checked a few years ago they did not do a "lock in price" at that time. They will do auto fill, but there was a catch to that and I do not remember what it was. I am fine with the way it works now. I call and they are here the next day.

I had 20s 30s and 40s filled at tractor supply yesterday for $1.67.
So, I basically paid them a premium of nearly $300 to deliver a couple hundred gallons.

I think my last fill in Harnett Co. was $2.53. That's with Dixie Denning. It's their tank but no rental fee. Don't think they charged to run 75 ft of line underground when they hooked it up.

Thanks for all the responses. Now I need a bit more guidance.

We built the house in 1997-8. I have no idea what we may have paid for the tank installation and lines. We do pay an annual rental fee for the tank. We’ve always bought gas from that same outfit.

Since it’s apparently their tank, can I continue renting it but shop around for cheaper gas? Should I tell them to “come get it” and start all over? What are my options? The gas is only used for a cooktop and grilling. It seems to me we consume an enormous amount of gas but they found no leaks when I asked for a check.

Some companies , if you change, just (buy) the tank from the current supplier. Not much of a hassle .IMHO If it's their tank there should be no rental fee. Or approach them, with the fact that you have paid rental fees for x many of years, about buying the tank .

If the tank belongs to the company you buy gas from you can have them come get it and reimburse you for any gas left in it and get another company to bring you a tank and fill it. Shop around an find one that does a pre-buy. It is a lot to pay at once but it saves you in the long run if gas goes way up.

A lot of companies (mine included) charge more for gas if you do not use it for heating also. In fact all the companies that I contacted around me do this. Mine does not charge a rental fee for the tank, but I am sure it is in the per gallon price.

They will want the tank back if you switch delivery companies. That’s the reason I suggest people not bury a tank.

You paid a premium price for propane. Blossom is high for home delivery. I cant tell you what 30 lb refills are because my customer and I don’t exchange money on sold items and services. Once they flag you have their tank you are locked in and if there is no competition around they set rates higher. I speak to the local Blossom guy about every couple months about products and services.

I know guys who bring their own tanks linked together to be filled on the back of a truck. Not an easy task but much cheaper like almost $1.00 per pound.

If you don’t mind the freshly dug dirt you can call another company. They will GLADLY did it up and replace it with theirs. Then you can call the old company to pick it up. They can remove the propane in the tank and credit you back.

I hesitate to do this but it has been one of those weeks so here goes.

I was a customer of the gas company in my town for over 20 years. towards the end of that time I started to notice something odd about my bill. At least once a year it seemed like I had a delivery that was more expensive than I expected. I questioned this and got no where with them. This happened over several years so I started checking the meter on the tank often so I knew how much was put in. It reads in % so you have to know how big your tank is and figure out the gallons by that. I checked it on the first delivery one year and the gallons delivered matched up to the % of fill that time. Next month when they came the % they put in was less than the previous time so the gallons and therefore the price should have been lower. It was not. As a matter of fact it was a good bit higher. The rest of that season the gallons always matched the %. I talked to several people in the gas business an they all said the gauges were pretty accurate.

I am pretty sure I know what was happening. The tickets are printed by the meter when the delivery is made but there is no name on it. Simple enuff for the driver to wait till later to add a name. I was sure he was getting to my house and had a smaller delivery and then putting my name on a larger ticket. Possibly his own house of that of a friend. This happened over the course on 3 or 4 years. Each time I questioned them about it they said that I couldn't go by the % meter on the tank yet everyone else in the business I talked to said they were accurate.

The next season I got a new company to deliver and I haven't had that problem since. The new company has GPS on the trucks so they know where the driver made each delivery. Take all that with a grain of salt. I am not saying that is what is happening to you but if I were you I would keep a check on the meter if the tank has one.

My gas is coming from Foster Fuels out of VA. Usually, fuel taxes and such are less in VA than NC but I haven't seen $1.89 propane ever that I can remember. I have a propane heat system which doesn't get used much as my main source of heat is wood. That is slowly changing as I am less able to put up the amount of wood I normally use yearly. We also have a gas cooktop and gas hot water heater. I have a 500 gal. tank which I bought years ago to get the reduced price per gallon as your "tank rental" is in the form of a higher cost per gallon here. All of this was done as I am on the end of a power line and the possibility of loss of electricity for an extended period of time is always a consideration. I'm glad I bought my tank way back when as I have been saving each fill up after having paid for the tank, plus, the tank is just an added perk when the time comes to move on.

Damn. Tractor Supply ripped me off... Paid $3+ a gallon last week to fill the tanks for my house. Was going to top off my RV. Guess I'll shop around...

Shop around. I just did a cursory online check on UHaul locations with propane and the prices ranged from $2.30 to $3.72. Some of the propane suppliers have facilities for drive up.

Source out your local delivery companies/depots and see what they can do for you. Tractor Supply is likely sourcing local anyway and marking up from there. Might as well go direct. We're with a smaller family owned company in SC and they are more than willing to accommodate. Said we could bring small tanks to them.

I was using a mom and pop joint in Wake Forest but they were a pain in the ass to deal with so I started going to tractor supply out of convenience. The price was about the same anyways. Guess I will have to revisit my options...

Have had the same provider for many years. Last filled 3 weeks ago. $3.19....we own our tank...always happy with the service but never with the price. We cook and have an iron heater that we use instead of the heat pump when it gets Cold. Our total bill for the year is around $400 so I don't squawk too much. Still....less would be better.

$1.89 at Costco. But mist people can't bring a 250 gallon propane tank to Costco.
Still, $1.20 otter gallon up charge seems high.
