I bought my NC property almost 4 years ago... 30 acres, two houses, a couple of sheds, a pool, and a small pond.

There is an in the ground pool, but it's over 20 years old. The pool had a deck around it, but it was never stained/ painted. The deck was literally rotting down.

Last month, I paid some local guys to come and rebuild the deck. They did an awesome job.

Two days ago, I started thinking about how great it would be to have a "pool house" attached to the new deck. So, I called those same guys and started asking questions. Based on their advice, today, I bought a new stick built shed (10ft x 20ft) ($4700) with a front porch, to put right up beside the new pool deck.

The guys are typing up the contact right now, but they have agreed to install a breaker box, wiring, light fixtures, ceiling fan, wall outlets, insulation, dry wall, flooring, interior paint, and porch light for an additional $4500.

I'll post pics as they are available... And I'll keep this updated as it moves along.

Basically, I'll have a tiny house (minus bathroom and kitchen) (no running water) for about $9k, by the pool, whenever guests want to come visit...

I wish a property like yours was on market. That sounds awesome. Unfortunately only decent properties in areas that work for us had piss poor schools.

Wake county for our primary house. Your shed probably wouldn’t even fit in my backyard lol. FML. Adulting sucks.

We got very lucky buying this property 4 years ago. I love everything about it, Pittsboro, the school system, etc... Our next door neighbor is a teacher at my kids' elementary school and she is so helpful.

The only problem is our lack of internet. My wife and I were already working from home before we moved here. We both need internet to send/ receive emails, do webex meetings, etc. We only live 7 miles from downtown Pittsboro. There is no reason that in 2020 there is no cable or internet wire run to this house.

I have called and emailed senators, spoken to "executives" at Century Link, Randolph Communications, and ATT. They all say, "Sorry. It's not worth it to run new fiber lines to you and your neighbors. "

My wife and I barely get by on 2mbps cell phone internet. We can send and receive emails. That's about it. When I have to run an important work meeting, I drive into town and use Wifi from the TacoBell parking lot...

It's a freaking joke...

Haha

I have pics that I want to upload to this thread, but I can't because the cell phone internet is too slow (1 bar of 4g). I'll have to upload them tomorrow from the Taco Bell parking lot...

You can't even get cable internet?

And BTW, it's still just a shed if there's no bathroom and kitchen... ;)

Nope... No cable tv. No cable internet. There is a landline phone from Century Link. That's it.

Elon Musk is planning to have Starlink operational in less than a year. I'll be jumping on that as soon as I can.

I feel your pain. I live 1/2 mile away from cable internet and they wont let us get it. I even asked if I could trench it myself. Gotta love that DSL life

I have a friend with the exact same issue and he offered to trench his also...………..Nada...…..nada...……….nada was the answer he received. It's time for change.

Wish I even had DSL at this point...

I pay $150 a month to a company called Broadband Wireless Q for a wireless hotspot that picks up 4G cell service and turns it into internet inside my house. The problem is that I only get 1 bar of 4G outside.

I bought one of those Antennae/ boosters and it didn't help much...

There's always satellite but it's not fast or cheap...
Hopefully Starlink will be faster than HughesNet... I honestly don't care about the price. At this point, I'd pay $500 a month for good quality internet...

My job (and my wife's job) literally depends on it... Especially if my company finds out how much time I'm spending in the Taco Bell drive through/ parking lot...

Haha

Yeah. HughesNet is laughable. When I was installing dishes for the lottery we used them with cell backup.... Nothing but trouble. Don't know who they bribed to get that contract.

Tomorrow, when I get to Taco Bell, I'll upload some pics. Y'all have a good night, and enjoy your internet streaming ...

Yes, internet was another big issue in the northern Orange Co property we looked into...You ever checked into 'fixed wireless'? A quasi-non-profit org called 'open broadband' is doing great job working with various municipal .govs, farmers etc (literally using their silos as infrastructure) to create a fixed wireless network. Cedar Grove was among the areas in initial phase. The range is anywhere from 25mbps up to gig internet speeds. Its conceptually like a home wireless network scaled up to neighborhood/town level.

we kept an eye on pittsboro for a few months (definitely much greater number of much better school than Orange County), but the 30+ acre/not-fixer-upper/<500k market was non-existent. you scored gold mine bud. Internet will be coming soon enough though as you point out, and if lucky fixed wireless may already be in area...

Sounds a lot like a place for a poker night and b’cue. I’ll bring bourbon and ribs. When we playing?

We have FO in W. Jefferson on a hillside. But we are so much more hi fallutin than Pittsboro folks.

Here's the new shed... 10' wide by 20' long.

I'll post more pics when it gets delivered and again as the internal renovation work moves along. We should have a fun little sleep over pool house ready in a few weeks.

You going to put a cozy bed or futon in there for me? :D

How about a fan for the summer? I’ll bring ribs.

Same here and they SUCK.
We’re 2 minutes off US-1 and 1 min off of Old US-1 between Sanford & Apex, we had to raise Cain with CenturySux just to get a phone line.

I'm 13 miles from Chapel Hill and about the same from Graham.

It's got overhead storage above the front door, and a loft in the back. Im going to put a queen size bed and a ladder going up to it.

It's gonna be insulated, dry walled, and painted. Ceiling fan, and a window air conditioner!

Nice! I assume you got the tile replaced, that was a big job! How long did it take?
I finally finished the tile. Im not allowed to talk about it in front of my wife because it still makes her angry.

It took months... I did it all myself and saved a lot of money. But the pool was only open for 3 weeks at the end of last summer. I would NOT do it again...

None the less, good job on a large project. I’ve tiled counters & bathrooms. Stripping and tiling a large pool is a ”Oh hail no.“

Thanks. Im happy with the final product... There are a lot of imperfections, but hopefully im the only one who will ever see them. I know my wife and kids don't care. They just want a clean pool to swim in.

Could be like my pops place in Florence, SC.

AT&T fiber runs through the road right of way directly in front of his house......

He can't get it somehow.

The subdivision they put up on one side has it and the apartment complex they just built on the other gets it. Yet they refuse to link him?

I haven't gotten involved for him. Either he hasn't really tried at all or (what I think) whatever developer/s have been buying and building up all the property around him have been doing some shady deals to stop services and perks to him because he won't sell his 10 acres in the middle of it all... Area was "rural/outskirts" but in the last decade plus the property is located in suburbia and the city is closing in.

Dude... That's a horrible idea... I'm trying to keep my family happy, not alienate them...
