I've have a single shot 12 gauge that was gifted to me just sitting around, and have always wondered about those caliber conversions. Reading up on them the consensus is they work, in that the round will discharge in the general direction you're pointing, but that's about it.

How could I pass up a chance to try that?

Picked up one of the 9mm rifled versions off ebay for $30-ish delivered. It's a nice piece of machined steel with good looking rifling, drops in without drama. With the breach closed though, you can hear it rattle a bit. Not a good sign for accuracy.

The only non-steel case 9mm I have that isn't defensive ammo is some speer 147gr subsonics. I fired a hand full of them trying to hit the 100 yard gong without the benefit of any sort of sights on the shotgun. Based on the impacts on the berm 6' right then 3' left then 4' high, then 3' low.... I'm going to say it's a solid 90 MOA gun in this configuration. Perfect, if the target is big enough. Never once missed the berm.

Spent casings fell right out. Kinda surprised about that, figured they might stick which is why I didn't use steel cased 9mm.

Report was handgun loud, and recoil was nothing. There is a guy on youtube who's showing off a red dot mount for these single shot guns, I'm half tempted to try that and see what accuracy is at 25 yards. That, and/or do the mod I've seen some of these come with in adding an o-ring to tighten up the fit.

Worth it? Probably not.... except it doubles as a high quality 9mm case gauge. So in that respect, maybe it is.

I see these things as a backup in case your 9mm pistol is disabled (or taken ) and you have no shotgun ammo. Beats hitting them over the head with an empty shotgun.

since you can drop in the adaptor, I wonder if you could have one fabbed up that could be as long as the barrel and increase the accuracy, a double barrel could essentially be 2 different calibers...hmmmm.......
the short shotshells allow for them to be stacked and racked...

They make 8" versions, but those move outside of 'toy' money range:

They actually used to make full length inserts in various calibers for double barrels. They may still be available. I don't remember the available calibers, but converting a SxS to a double rifle would be cool in a caliber like 45-70.

I can see the utility under dire circumstances, even read a really good review on them in Backwoodsman magazine, BUT..........if all I was able to afford was a single shot shotgun, these adapters would be out of my price range.

These seem like one of those ā€œsolutionsā€ in search of a problem. For 30 bucks itā€™s a conversation piece, anything else is just silly. I canā€™t imagine any scenario where I would have use for a single shot 9mm much less one that is packaged within a 12 gauge shotgun lol.

at least ya had fun tinkering with it.

If SBS and SBRs weren't regulated I could see a use. Right now, not really... A little chopped coach gun could be neat with various inserts.

This would be expensive but a full length insert that threads together would be awesome. Not sure I would want it for anything high pressure though.

I have a 20 gauge insert that I have used in my 12 gauge sxs a couple of times. I bought it at GBO gunshow several years ago from an older fella that made them at his home shop. It was affordable but nice. I suck at wingshooting, but if I could pop off a shot really quick on low birds with the 20 gauge round it made me look like a dang genius shot. And I kept a regular 12 gauge shell in my full choke barrel for the higher birds. Just a little bit of goofy fun.
