Build or Assemble

You assemble AR-15’s
You build 1911’s

And there’s all manner of gray in between. And even “building” a 1911 I speak of doesn’t necessarily mean starting with bar stock.

So its rare to start from nothing and build a one off. Its just a very unique right the laws allow. I'd think more people would take the opportunity. I like doing it and just wondered if there were people in this area that also do. I've only been in NC for about 6 years.
Sounds like an introduction is in order. Tell us what you build.

So the barrel is inlaid the full length of that rifle?

yes sir. I'm 6'4" and usually stand on a stool to load it. Total weight is close to 30#.

I envy those with the skills to create. I can build beautiful guitars from raw lumber, but metal working is voodoo to me & building a gun is just some next level stuff, IMO.

Also just so you understand when a custom part seems like an absurd amount of money, that 1 piece of 3 1/2 inch diameter of Ti costs about $1200-$1400 per foot before it even starts getting worked.View attachment 234008

Yep. Makes for really expensive scrap if you bork it up too, for those who didn't know. I remember my first encounter with it many years ago, my buddies in the shop gave me a short Titanium bar and a blueprint, and laughed their butts off when I told them I'd never worked with it but it couldn't be too difficult.

It's crazy difficult to work with....
