Hi Rimfire guys! Many of you might not know me, as I don't shoot a lot of rimfire. So I am not down here much, in fact, never have been. So hello!
Cruising around a couple of weeks ago, I saw this, took a look, and thought to myself this just looked like a hell of a lot of fun, I'd like to play too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a couple of rimfire rifles, so I figured while I was doing some other big bore work on the range, I would check out my rifles and get them sighted in. I have a Brno 22 lr that I have taken on several prairie dog shoots and had the most fun with it than any of the normal 223s. Fact is, I am pretty proud of a few prairie dogs I have taken with this rifle. The first trip I took it on, I was able to score a prairie dog at 176 yards! Measured by laser. Man, I was pretty proud of that. The next trip out, I quit with the benches and went off on Walkabout. Along with a set of sticks. I spotted a couple of dogs way out, fired one round for range, next for effect and hit the damn thing. There was one right behind it, and hit it too! Measured the distance, 226 yards, NEW RECORD for me. So yes, I figured surely to heavens I could hit these flies at 50 yards... Piece of Cake..................
So over the last couple of weeks I have been testing various 22 lr Ammo I had on hand to see how the Brno shoots it. I had a 3X9 Nikon on the gun and it was shooting pretty good. Then I tested some CCI 36 gr HP's I had, and it really liked these. This is my 5 round test......I suppose I pulled one round out.
OK, this was good, I would zero the scope and start knocking the flies eyes out ...................
Oh H*ll Yes......... I quit after three rounds, I knew a 4th would be a jinx...... no way I was going to mess this 3 rd group up! Watch out Fly Eyes, HERE I COME...................Holy Cow, I am going to kick some FLY ASS NOW..........
WOO HOO............................
OK, well it just didn't quite work out as I thought!
My scores were so low, I am even ashamed to announce them! OMG, it was awful. After trying 3 times, it was apparent I could not hit these damn flies! Wait, I had shot so good above???????? OK, I could not see the flies so good, I had a nice diamond target, easy to line up the cross hairs in that and keep steady............. Shooting a LONE FLY was a whole different GAME................
Hmmm....... Bigger scope.......... I came in, did a search and had a 4X12 Nikon, YES, that might be enough, going from 9- 12X Might work..... So I mounted the scope, sighted it in................ But it was just as dismal as the 3X9, I still could not see the damn flies good enough............
OK OK OK........... Let me drag out the BIG STUFF now....................... Serious target shooting..........My Anschutz Model Match 54.................. But it only has irons on it, and I am not going to lie, I have never shot it since getting it..............
I looked and yes, I believe I could mount a scope on it, but what was the point, the Brno would shoot good enough, I just can't see good enough, I need MORE POWER....... I did shoot a nice 1 inch group with the Anschutz and the irons, I was
pretty pleased with that....................
Now I really got fed up with this crap. What can I do? How can I hit those damn flies?
GET A BIGGER GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now we talking just my Game! Go Big, or Stay Home! Big Bore rifles have always solved my problems for me, I should be able to NUKE these damn Flies with a Proper Rifle Caliber!
This morning I decided to give it a go with one of my .500 caliber rifles................. And guess what........ I did pretty spiffy!
