One thing I've noticed from all the post and it was true back in the 70's and 80's when I deer hunted regularly. The vast majority of the deer killed in the Carolinas is at less than 100 yards and a good many at less than 50. Nothing has changed in 40 years and I still get amused when I'm in gun shops and someone buys a 300 Win Mag with the largest scope in the shop.
I use big glass but just in 3x9. I hunt on 4 during daylight and 3 at dusk and dawn. I’ve shot deer at less than 15 feet on a couple occasions. Most of my rifle kills are within now distances.
Best was in SC. I had the magnification up thinking I’d shoot something on the other side of the creek. Then one came trotting right at me on the ground. About 15’ and I could not even shoulder the rifle since he was looking at me. He got distracted and I tilted the rifle up on my knee. Found his front leg in the scope, centered it, and raised it until it was all brown. DRT with a .270 shot like a pistol off my knee.
