Ever shoot a Sten?

I have a semi-auto one(I know it's not the same).

The sten in the op is a Fin owned gun.

I shot several FA Sten's back in the mid 90's. They had a reputation for being an inexpensive but temperamental SMG.

As far as inexpensive SMG's, I much preferred the Swedish K (AKA Carl Gustov and Port Said).

"inexpensive" is an interesting term. "K"'s are 15k+ these days

If I was picking my end of the world smg, it would be hard to go wrong with a Swedish K. Good enough for Charlton Heston...

Shot one in FA.....it was a hoot. The cyclic rate is so slow coupled with the lack of recoil it's like a true bullet hose. I mean you could literally draw pictures on a target.

Ive got a demilled mark II kit. At least I think its a mark II. I can't remember right off. I've had it boxed up in the garage for years. I've been "laying up" to build it into a semi. Other things have taken my time and money though. It'll be there when I get ready to build it though!

I have been givng a semi auto build some thought too. If I get started on mine any time before you. I will send you my parts sources and info if you want it. I bought a re iver section to mill out a few shows ago but like yours it iscollecting dust. They really need more days in a week there is just not enogh time.

Had a buddy in highschool who's dad had an FA Sten. 1st machine gun I ever fired. Very cool...

Had a MkII in Iraq in 05-06'. Had a dent in the one mag I had so only held 5 rds. Had several Sterling SMGs which I prefer over the STEN.

Perhaps so you could shoot it lying down?

I sold my MkII parts kit, ended up with a FA M11 which I've installed a Tungsten bolt to lower the rate to the ~600 RPM range of a sten. Sten's are still "affordable" in an NFA sort of way and a bunch of fun to shoot.

Here is a question, why did they build it with the magazine sticking out the side instead of the bottom?

If you're shooting prone, a side magazine let's you keep the gun closer to the ground. The Sten's were supplied to a lot of the resistance fighters, not for going door to door by regular troops.

Trench warfare, you dont want to stick your head up any higher then you have to. Some guns mags stuck up at a 45 degree angle or so to help feeding.

Part of it is to counter muzzle rise during firing as well. You naturally grip the mag with your palm on top of the mag and your fingers wrapped around underneath, that causes you to naturally push down and to the right while the gun climbs up and to the left. It's one of the things that make the stens and sterlings such nice guns.
If you're building you can order a tube made to rotate the magwell to vertical, the gun has no problems feeding that way either.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Stens are fun to shoot and s l o wwwwwwww

Here's a video of a stress shoot I ran in Dec 05 in Balad Iraq (I've got the timer). Shorty shooter was a JAG CPT in the 101st ABN DIV. The course of fire was limited to 8 rds in a magazine (had no M1 Garands :( ) Targets were all German WWII soldiers in different firing positions. Last part is run to a STEN subgun and fire at a steel popper to stop the clock. STEN mag only had 5 rds due to dent as described earlier. Another stage had them move a M19119A6 Browning .30 cal machine gun between firing positions.

it was Christmas and some of my shooters where from the 101st hence Battle of Bastogne-1944
STEN at 2:10 mark
