I thought there were some mushroom threads floating around, but I must be overlooking them.

Anyway, we have been covered up with oyster mushrooms this year. Been getting a few "tree ears" too. Those are the red looking ones.

Haven't seen a damn morel all year though. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.

The wife and the youngest daughter came back from the creek with these about an hour ago.

That is about about half of what they found. Probably their 12-15th successful foray in the past two months.

But, the way the temps and rains have been this year, it's been a banner year so far anyway. We were picking in late January/early February when we had a little heat wave with rain.

J-frame for size reference.

I'd love to see more NC/SC pics and id's. I know some of y'all have posted several in the past. Maybe on the Crack Smokers sight. Can't remember. Seemed like @The Green Heron had a lot of pics.

If I missed a mega thread on here, somebody let me know where and I'll merge them.

All the old shroom stuff was at the "crack smokers" site, lmao.

Saw some today that would have been great convo fodder, sorry I got no picks. Looked like chanterelles but they weren't. Really wish I'd gotten some pics for edumacational purposes.

I'll do better now that I'm tied into this thread.
There's one out there that makes me think of chanterelles...but isn't. It's early yet for them, I think. I usually (when I do) look for them in August. Hit or miss... but what a score when you find 'em!

I wish I had some oysters nearby!

My shitake logs are old and done producing. Time to inoculate more.

My old Droid autocorrect was horrible and would change words typed correctly. Guilty for the aforementioned error. At least it wasn't a for sail ad...

I'd like to know more about them for sure. I was always told not to eat what grows in the wild as I would fall down in the rabbit hole....

For instance, I didn't know you needed a pistol as shown in the picture with @thrillhill 's harvest. What caliber would be the best for harvesting? Do they flop around much?

Seriously, I know @The Green Heron has a lot of knowledge, and my girls love mushroom dishes, I would just want to learn more.

Get you an Audubon field guide for shrooms. I wouldn't turn Forrest Gump loose with just a field guide, but a reasonably intelligent person, who can follow directions, can find a lot of safe eats with a field guide.

Found two big patches of these guys in my backyard after last night's heavy rain fall. What do you say? Located in Mooresville, NC. Look almost like a chanterelle to me but I'm not super educated!

Got some too. Suspect honeys, waiting to see if the kid gets sick...

The mushrooms in the op are Ringless Honey Mushrooms.

They are edible, kinda.

Some folks have a severe gastro reaction that can cause illness that lasts for 6-8 weeks.

Some folks don't. No way to know if you are one of those that will until you try.

Our family avoids them since we have better options.

As much as I'd love to take credit, I hollered at my wife, she looked at the pics for about 2 seconds, and said exactly what I typed! LOL!

She is the food whisperer.

I'll defer to Mrs thrillhill.
I'm not gonna eat that kind of mushroom. As Bill said there are too many easy options.

If you confused these any at all with chanterelles please be very careful. They look nothing like a chanterelles.

Audubon mushroom field guide. I know I'm advocating buying a book in actual print. Please do so, for me, and for you.
Lots of easy mushrooms out there.

She is the food whisperer.

You need to start referring to her as Mistress of the Woods. And bow when you do it.
That would make you two Master and Mistress of the Woods. Has a nice ring to it. I foresee a reality show in your future.

And I mean that in the best way possible. I just want to be there when they film the first episode.

I'm no shroom expert but I've eaten them a time or three.

Just make sure you're in a good frame of mind, have a comfortable chair, a fire to sit in front of is nice and some Pink Floyd cued up on the iPod.

Wait, what are we talking about again?

Still harvesting oyster mushrooms in January. Texture is a little different this time of year.

The wife cut these into long narrow strips and fried them. We had mushroom "fries" with our hot dogs last night.

I like to look for chanterelles, hen of the woods and chicken of the woods. We look for morels but never find them. My mother is law is great at shroom hunting. With the fires here in the Rutherfordton area last year I am hoping for some morels this spring.

I was taking a break from bush-hogging on Monday when my eldest and the wife came walking out of the woods with some shrooms (I'm still sitting on the tractor, that's why picture angles look a little funny).

As usual here lately, they had found PLENTY of oyster mushrooms. We have been pretty much covered up with those the last couple of years.

They did find a FEW chanterelle mushrooms, the smaller orange looking ones in the pics.

They had to come back for more baskets though. The wife said that what she had in the basket was only about a third of the oysters in that sector. I had to go back to work but I believe they ended up with about 12-15 pounds of oysters that day.
