This will be a long ways off, one of my assignments for my gunsmithing corse is making 2 shotguns, for the first one I want to build a pump action but as its my first shotgun build I want to use a relatively affordable receiver as the base, I’ve heard that Hatfield shotguns are basically budget guns used for projects, I know better shotguns exist in that price range but I want to have peace of mind knowing “I literally have to try to make this gun worse but at the same time I have to put a lot of work in to make it better” . My second shotgun I’m going to make a rolling block shotgun using a higher quality receiver as a base. Is this the right move or should I just go with something like an old Stevens pump action for the first one?

There are lots of reasons the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 series are the most popular shotguns. I would do one of each so you are familiar with the two most common models.
I appreciate the concern that being said I was told by my instructor that we would simply be making stocks for existing shotguns, if we were working on the enteral aspect I would go with Remington and or Mossberg. Having to purchase a shotgun for the purpose of this project I can’t justify spending a lot of money Especially because I have to restock 2 shotguns And in the same semester I build two rifles “ both of which have to be 98 Mausers” I have to be very very frugal with my grant money, I also have to buy that semester’s tools as well so I’m dropping the rolling block idea in favor of the Hatfield single shot I already own To minimize cost “though i may have more funds due to being able tho get a majority of the tools with my first semester’s grant I want to wait until I have to buy the 98 Mauser receivers as they are becoming more difficult to obtain and thus could be a higher price than originally anticipated” I probably will have the funds for both a Remington and a Mossberg By that time I just want to have a backup plan should the need arise

Stupid question, do you have to buy them? Could they be loaned to you by “friends and family”?

I did a Steven's 311 and an old single shot 410 my gpa had laying around. We used to go to that pawn shop in downtime Roxboro by the courthouse and they had a ton of old junkers for the gunsmiths to work on. Maybe check and see if they're still there. I think i got my Steven's in fair condition for $199. Sold it afterwards for $400 and wish i hadn't now.

I don’t plan on selling this one , I’ve been looking for one of these for close to 5 years “never thought I would find one for such good price “ God just kind of dropped this one in my lap
