Got took for $525 today. "Member" had great feedback and I sent Venmo. They were supposed to ship handgun to my FFL tomorrow. Luckily site staff responded quickly and banned the username. I doubt the real member even knows he was hacked. Guess I'll no longer be sending money to "friends".

Venmo is no help and I doubt NFCU will do anything about it.

Sucks.

Was it the .357 340PD? I only ask because I had reached out to him to see where he was located and he said that, due to work, he would only ship, no FTF. If so, he also has a single-shot .22 Winchester listed. If not, apologies to the poster of those ads.

That's the one....

I sort of figured that when he wouldn't even tell me where he was located.................Figure if it acts like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a d.........k

I guess I'd rather it happen to me than you guys. It's not a really big hit for me but still not happy about it. NFCU might come through and help, but I doubt it. Just changes the way I'll be doing business moving forward. There needs to be a better system to catch these accounts when they get hacked. Not everyone uses MFA, including myself (at the moment).

No but even $20 is enough to piss me off if you steal it from me. What a piece of trash, whoever it is. They knew gun stuff lingo and prices. Didn't set off any alarms by being too good a deal, or by seeming off in discussion.

Hate it for ya. Let’s start a secret phrase so only members know it’s really us and not hackers.

Example:

@Longlegs Whats the password?

@SpecialK How about you suck my balls

@Longlegs It’s a deal, you’ll be receiving the funds shortly.

For those that don’t get it

How dare you assume my gender.

Sorry to hear you were snookered. Insisting on FTF is another option to avoid such thievery.

My own rule is that if I wouldn't send cash (which I wouldn't to ANYONE), then I wouldn't use a digital means that's equivalent to sending cash. This doesn't eliminate getting caught in all scams, but it then takes at least a pretty sophisticated one to actually get and keep your money. The credit card we use for 90% of our buying is also absolutely super about "disputed" payments and warning us immediately if they detect any charge that looks fishy to them. They have all the AI and staff to do this, and they're using it well.

Is it a North Carolina bank ?

BOA. Been dealing with them for probably 35 years. They're not perfect by any means. But they're really up on the technology necessary to protect your accounts and what's in them. At least that's been our experience. We've dealt with (had accounts in -- business and personal) other banks over the years; and my wife has actually been involved in large software projects with some of them on a consulting basis (Wachovia/Wells Fargo and BOA, for example) but we so far haven't found anything as good. I'm not trying to sound like a commercial for them, but one thing I'd look for in a bank is immediate and appropriate handling of any charges on my credit card, and careful monitoring of other payments, and immediate and effective respones to any "data breaches" involving your funds or credit accounts.

When we use PayPal, for example, we only use it in conjunction with paying with the BOA card so that in case something goes wrong (and that may not even be criminal activity), we can easily dispute a charge if necessary and know it will be handled well.

Of course, this doesn't address all the circumstances you might be involved in, but in general I think the best advice is to avoid those circumstances -- however much you're tempted by a "deal" or something you "have to have". :)

Thank you for the information. I am thinking about getting a credit card and a PayPal account with a bank that will protect my assets when Things don't go as planned. I will look into BOA. Again, thanks.

Glad to see that you are getting your money back. Venmo has surprised me on this. I have never used them and just don't know much about them.

Dang, scammers are definitely getting better. Glad you got your money back!

Maybe a weird personal rule, but I won't send electronic payment unless we're communicating via text or call first. Not foolproof obviously but it gives me a good feeling.

Any further recourse against this “Steve Fashawe”? Or are you done now that you got your money back?

I doubt there is anything to be done. Probably in an Indian call center. Venmo said they would freeze all funds related to his account and Reverse what they can. Their fraud department is investigating. As for me.... I'm going to sacrifice an aged ribeye tonight and pray he gets ball cancer.

I reported it to my bank but im not holding my breath.

A lesson with a price tag... maybe itll stick with me and save me from a bigger blunder.

You were extremely lucky since Venmo prohibits firearm transactions on their platform. The saving grace is that he can’t get the money by claiming that you were buying a gun either.
