So after 4 years of hunting only thanksgiving and Christmas on family land in Dillon, SC, I finally killed my first deer, a heart shot with 5 mins left to pull the trigger I killed this button buck, which I thought was a doe. Nothing big, but he will still eat great.

Now I have the itch for sure, how does one go about getting land to hunt on in Southern Wake county or surrounding areas?....probably won't make it this year but next year for sure. https://i.imgur.com/ISEyojW.jpg

Congrats. Little button buck?

like the buck as the buttons on his head but no antlers so it is still an antlerless deer

Yeah they’re called button bucks. I wasn’t making fun of you I’ve killed a few over the years especially while now hunting because I thought they were a doe.

I’m a meat hunter anyway so if it’s brown it’s down. And they taste just as good.

I went this morning again, and let 5 does walk, now I need something for the wall.....

Sitting in a ground blind, got in a little late due to the fact that that apparently the Christmas decorations had to be out of the attic before we could go, (uncle, cousin and I) and we were sitting in a ground blind, about a 40 yard shot with an old remington 700 in .308 and the stock 3x9x40 that came on it. Can hunt an hr after sunset in SC and we had around 10 mins left before we were going to pack up, my uncle was on the binoculars and he taps my shoulder and said 2 doe just walked out the woods, I set up the rifle on the "shootin stick" like my little cousin calls it, and they walk in close enough to wear I could just make out that they were deer, pulled the trigger and he dropped. I was/am so exited.....i gotta find land near me.

Congrats, and cool story!

I took my daughter this afternoon. We were in a box blind about 8' of the ground, overlooking a feeder and three shooting lanes. She's hoping for a nice buck, but is also a chip off the ol block and wants meat in the freezer.

It was a very exciting hunt and we ended it watching 9 does at the feeder. We could hear grunting and running in the woods surrounding the feeder area, but it finally got too dark.

Tomorrow..... tomorrow.

That's better. My heart was pounding when I killed my first. 308 is a good deer gun.

I can't remember my first but it gets in your blood that's for sure. Just FYI...I'm pretty sure in WakeCo. with a "center fire rifle" that you have to be 8' off the ground. Shotgun and muzzle loader you are good to go in a ground blind. I'm in N.WakeCo. and we had a nice 40 acre piece of land to hunt the last 3 years. My hunting/shooting buddy moved to SC and the permission to hunt the land went with him unfortunately. There's deer all over WakeCo. I have about 9 in my back yard at all times. Bucks have been pushing does for weeks now. Never seen the rut go more than a couple weeks at a time B4. FWIW...I have does in my back yard 99% of the time and 2 miles away on what was our hunting land all we ever saw and harvested was bucks. Go figure.

They know your yard is a safe place.:)

I was at the wildlife tent at the state fair this year, and there was an info graphic and it said that wake county has the highest population of deer per square mile than any other county in the state.

I have my NC hunting/fishing license but I will have to brush up on the rules if I make it this year, but hopefully next year.

The land I was going to hunt this year, the property behind it got sold and they built a million houses on it and there is no way it is safe to shoot on my buddy's property now, makes me mad cause they complain about the tractor noise and the pistol shooting we do on the other side of the property.

Get in a tree and shoot to the ground.

Meat is good. I got one the other night. Its was with one of the new Fusion bullets. Made by Ford. due to the lack of hunting lads in the Wake Co area I stopped hunting a few years back. Scouted areas for two different years all summer without seeing anyone the on opening day people were everywhere. I remember everyone I ever killed.

so you went on public land?

so you went on public land?
Yes it is shown in the hunting regulations book. Most of the land is Power companies but is open to hunting as public land and managed my Game wardens.
Its not much in the area hence heavy population.

Also, consider shooting suppressed. There's not much you can do about that this season, but if you buy now, you may have something in time for next year. This is assuming you don't already own one.

how does that even work, do you like put a no trespassing sign on your stand or?

that requires money, but as someone who already has hearing loss at 22, suppressors are high on my list, still looking for a rifle though, I only have an AR a 870 and a few pistols.

An AR will kill them dead. Ask @11B CIB

One of mine. Not the one I hunt with, though. I don't have a pic of that one handy. I hunt mostly over feeders, too.

Like @kcult said, ARs will do the trick! I shot my last deer at 150yds with a 64gr Power Point and it dropped on the spot.

I had a picture of it but lost it when my old phone died but it was with this rifle:

Congrats on your first harvest. I remember my first deer hunt back in Texas in 82'. Got a doe at 75 yds with an unsporterized M1903 Springfield in .30-06. You can look online at NC Wildlife on where to hunt or join a hunt club. All I hunt on in Brunswick county is gamelands and I get a few every year with either bolt .308 or AR15 in 5.56.

For wake county, you have to be @ least 8ft off ground on public land (game lands). Not sure about private. That would suck if rules apply to private property.

I'm usually at least 20' up. Being elevated is a good idea when hunting with a gun. Besides I feel safer (hopefully) being above some knucklhead's round potentially whizzing by.

If I owned property and could set up a real solid stand, I would feel that way. At end of day though, stats show far more stand injuries than negligent homicides during hunting season.

as a first gen hunter learning the ropes, I’m admittedly a bit intimidated by the stand. Did some basic stuff few years ago in hunting license class, but not much hands on time. The only info still stuck in my head is “be careful.”, “dangerous as $h!&”, “don’t be an idiot”...lol.

There’s a field two miles from you that had literally a dozen does just grazing 25 yards from the road yesterday.

Since no one answered you question I will. Assuming you are talking about Game Land in North Carolina, you can use an elevated stand, ladder, climber, etc. as long as it is not attached to a tree with any kind of nails, screws or such. You can leave you stand on the game lands but it does not guarantee you that spot and if you come in and someone is in the stand all you can do is ask them to vacate. Whether they do or not depends on how nice they decide to be.'

As far as the height regulation is concerned, it is a county wide regulation applying to public and private land alike. You must be at least 8 feet above the ground to take game with a center fire rifle.
