Here's how my first match started

For the guys who are thinking about this please come out. I honestly had NEVER shot the pistol I took. Thankfully I found something last Tuesday that was legal in the "Back up gun" match. If I not I was going to shoot anyway with my EDC.
During that match the targets are really close,, I'm guessing the farthest one was 25 ft. I could have thrown rocks and honestly hit most of them.
My biggest fear was than I was gonna suck but I knew I would be among friends so I didn't care.
I was worried about be out of shape, which I am. In my 50's,, 6'1" 260lbs,, smoke 2 packs a day and eat out 90% of my meals.
In other worlds I'm not a speed demon.
Remember this guys,, I seen some guys that were really good to me, but if anyone out there was really great,,, they wouldn't be there. They would be doing it for a living. It's recreational guys and that's it.

By SERPA, you mean the kind with the trigger-finger unlocking mechanism right? I’ve got a couple Kydex holsters like that, just with the unlocking button eliminated
I've found the perfect excuse. It's no longer about me being unable to shoot. I own two of those style holsters. :)

I've got video of me shooting the stage MM is speaking of. But I don't have the avenue to get it from my phone to somewhere so y'all can see it, and it ain't because I'm ashamed either. Somebody that has a youtube channel or FB wanna load it up I'm cool with that. I'm not into initiating all that just for a video.

Was my first match as well. With a new to me gun, but I had shot a few rounds through it before Saturday.
And I got some guidance beforehand from someone here on this forum.
My only goal was to be safe and not get DQ'ed. And I succeeded!! Think I placed 46th.
I think there were 6 or 7 new shooters there.
Everything being said here about it is true. It's fun stuff. Absolutely no reason not to try it. I'm not a very skilled shooter and I made it through.
I was nervous but what the hell, that went away after about two stages.
It's tons more fun than turnin' money into noise at the square range.
Not having the latest, greatest gear is NOT an excuse.
Not being the best or even a good shooter is NOT an excuse.
Like stated earlier, nobody's gonna laugh or cry.
C'mon out and give it a go. 2nd Sat every month. BUG on a 5th Sat.
I plan on shooting the next match too(work permitting) and I'm gonna run a 20 year old Ruger P89! Can't wait!!
C'MON!!! If I can do it you can too.

@Majicmike
Where ya get that stage by stage scorecard?

Ahhh ha never mind, I figured it out. at least I figured something out.

They needed a High speed Camara to catch me in action,,, no body brought one
I was standing behind you with the shot clock watching your every move, so I might remember.
Only trouble is, I used to have a mind like a steel trap, but now it's more like a broken watch.
Only right twice a day.

In the new shooters meeting did you ask about where to carry extra mags????
I just looked at your profile and it said you wer in your 50's. If so I was right beside you on your right side,, we could have had a pants down man hug.

I have to report that after talking to majicmike for five plus years on-line that I did in fact get a manhug when I finally met him Saturday.

Thanks. What's the difference between IDPA and USPSA? I'd like to use my carry (full size or Commander 1911) gear for it, if at all possible.

In addition to Anthill Range, you may also want to look at Low Country Preserve (Near Tabor City).

The basic difference between IDPA and USPSA is that IDPA is focused more on defensive style stages, where USPSA is focused more on shooting challenge stages. I hope that makes sense... I like both, but have been only able to make USPSA matches recently.

You can use your carry 1911's in either sport.

Actually just asked about using my P93 in one of these matches. Definitely going to try this (especially after finding out about the man hugs!!). Gotta get me some decent muffs now.

Thanks for explaining the difference. I actually shoot at Low County somewhat often as a guest of a family member. I'll have to ask around next time I'm there.

Howard Leight Impact Sports on Amazon. Or for more sensitive ears Howard Leight impact pros on Amazon.

A lot of bang for the buck with either

I gave a brand new pair of the Pros to the guy I came with. My son bought me some at Christmas I like better,,, I think they are called Razors?????

Yup that was me asking all the questions.
Didn't have any mag carriers as I wasn't expecting to have to do a mag change on the clock. I must have looked at old rules or something
So I was stuffing 2 under my belt and had 2 in my pocket.

Those are current rules, but we do a “modified” BUG match now to more resemble how we really carry. I had mags in my pockets, too.

10-4. It was all good.
It just added another element to my already nervous state of mind.

I believe that Low Country has their USPSA match on the 4th Saturday. They had their regular USPSA match on the 24th of March [4th Saturday] and a (special) Classifier Match on the 31st.

I have been trying to get back out to one of their matches for the past few months, but work and family responsibilities have been hampering me. I really hated missing both the regular and classifier matches last month.

Perhaps we could meet up the next time you're out this way.

What's the difference between IDPA and USPSA?

IDPA has less modified guns, and tries to be a place to shoot guns you might actually carry (although a lot of people bring out their full-size range toys to get every advantage they can). The most rounds you'll see in a stage is 18 with an emphasis more towards 12. The scoring is simpler.

USPSA is more of a sport abstract from practical considerations. The guns are more specialized to the sport (although you can shoot pretty much any service gun in Production). The stages are usually more than 20 rounds, topping out at 32. The stages are more complex, and the scoring is hard to understand (but does a good job of rewarding the smaller increases of skill as you get better and better).

If you have a choice, start with IDPA. Ignore what everyone tells you about which is better. They're both good.

Getting ready for my first full match.
My goals for this is the same as the "BUG" match.
Get through with DQ'ing or any big mistakes.
Wear your swimming trunks. It's gonna be warm Saturday.
