There are a couple sides to this, and both bug the cr*p outta me.
First, there's the side where Zuckerberg and Friends (read: "everybody else running an internet site, especially social internet sites") are deliberately and methodically collecting data on all their users and then deliberately making that data available to other people and agencies WITHOUT any consent and WITHOUT regard to any "promises" not to do so.
Much as I hate to say it, so long as there are no specific and strong laws against this practice, this won't change. Why? Because a company/website policy for or against anything can be changed or violated by the company with little, if any, notice at all...and the punishment for such is minimal, if not non-existent at all. "So, sorry, I know we SAID we'd 'never share your data', but there you have it...there's no law against it."
Then there's the OTHER side...the side where people like us...LOTS of people like us...bring up all this data mining and privacy issues all the time to people and the people just collectively stick their heads in the sand and chant "LALALALALALA!"
They either don't want to know about such issues, don't believe it's a real problem, or are just totally clueless about what people like us have been talking about in the first place.
THAT annoys the h*ll out of me because they're the ones who are the first to cry "FOUL!" when this whole thing rears its ugly head and bites THEM in the *ss.
Personally, with ONLY specific exceptions for some people on a personal basis, my response to them is "You got what you deserved, you've been told about this for YEARS."
As for those in Congress...I'm all about telling THEM to have a nice, piping hot cuppa STFU with a side order of Eat-Sh*t-And-Die over this. They've KNOWN about this problem for YEARS, they've had many complaints from their constituents about this for YEARS, and worse...THEY'VE BEEN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS FOR YEARS AS WELL.
Data mining by the government isn't anything new...and with no laws against what these huge social media sites (and other sites) collecting and distributing such information, they've been able to take full advantage of it themselves.
The issue with the Russians? Smoke screen. Our own government has been doing this for years...overtly and covertly. Certainly Obama did it...and the Democrats crowed about how smart and successful a tactic it was when Obama got elected twice.
There are so many pots calling the kettle black in DC over this, and everything connected to it, that you could light off a magnesium flare over the Capital and see nothing but black.
