The short and the long, is he started his own business in 2003 after the owners sold the business he worked and told him his paycheck was going to be cut in to a 1/3 and they were taking away rebar. Which my dad brought to the business (they had 4 stores in NC and SC) and make the company a ton of money.
My Dad sells commercial building supplies, mainly products concrete contractor use. We sell to anyone, don't have to be a contractor. Mainly it's vapor barrier, high chairs, wall ties, sonna tubes, expansion joint, insulation, wire mess, wire rolls, anchor bolts, rebar toppers, pike ballers, etc. We can and do get everything from vapor barrier up to roof top access doors.
Fast forward, to 2003 JDS Supply is formed (John, Dustin, Sandra) we are family business with 7 employees 3 of which are my family. I still work part time with them, even though I'm at CAT. Things are changing in that department once we are moved in.
Dad bought commercial land 10 years ago and I've been telling him to go build a building Wasn't until this year that he did. I did all the site drawing, building drawings, etc. If it needed to be drawn in CAD, I did it. Also did 3d model lays outs to up the efficiency of rebar through put. We cut, bend and form up rebar for customers. Doesn't matter how many times someone touches it, you only get paid for it one time.
Finally got Pops to invest in CNC shear line. He's old school and while I understand his thinking we are only getting bigger and need the capacity. When I'm running my mill, he just comes in to his shop and just stands and watching the mill do the work. He won't say it but he's amazed by it. Hell I am to. Funny story, once he bought the shear line I said "well when are you going to visit them and learn the machine"..."Me??...uh no, you are" he said.
Anyway here's the building in it's current state. We were suppose to be moved in by now and me working full time. I love what I do, don't get me wrong..I really do. But to have the opportunity to forge my on way destiny, as cheese as that sounds means more to me. He wants to get in to manufacturing and that's something I do know a thing or two about, but he's very conservative. I would have a lot to learn still. I don't sleep alot because I'm always reading or on Youtube University .
To simply say I'm proud of him is a understatement. Stories he tells of his life a kid growing up, I can't image. He's a great man and a great Dad. I tell him now, even though I'm 30, I wish he would of broke his foot off in my butt more than he did. He just comes back with a smart remark like "you turned out ok.....I guess" with a half smile.
