I am thinking about buying a liquor still off of the internet and was wondering if anyone had one or had an opinion on using one. The one that I'm looking at is an eight gallon size, stainless steel, indoor, oven top. Or is it illegal to do in NC?
Thank you.

Yeah its ILLEGAL ....... ....... not even for personal consumption.

Edit to add unless you are making fuel. That kind of still can't make ethanol pure enough to run in a vehicle.

Google as my fuel making skill may be slipping a bit.
But it is on point for making biodiesel

according to THIS site, it IS legal to make moonshine in NC for personal consumption... it is SC where it is illegal to operate a still, unless for purification of water, or making ethanol for fuel...

I always thought it was legal to make ethanol for personal consumption in SC... damned gubmint has to micromanage and tax every damned thing.

"That" kind of still can do 190 proof. Now I am not certain how pure you want it but that is about as pure as you can get it outside of a lab.

Check out these guys. They have alot of videos on youtube and info on the websites. But yes it is illegal to distill alcohol in the land of the free ( without paying an exorbitant tax ).

If you read in depth on that site the states I orange are the ones where it is legal. (If I'm reading it correctly)

I know one man personally and very well that is doing 10 years for making it for personal consumption.

Iirc it's illegal to even posses untaxed liquor in nc.

You also need a federal fuel alcohol permit in any state to make ethanol for fuel.

So in other words, if you buy the still leave it unused and stored away until enough time has passed for your purchase to be off the radar.

Do you really expect the Fed to come knocking on your door?? If they do don't answer!!! If it comes up later just say you were too popped to come to the door... If you'll stop posting about it here no body will ever know....

I'm wearing my skeptical face on this one. How does one get 10 years for a misdemeanor? unless it wasn't really for personal use?

Posession of even one quart WITH the still is intent. It's not a misdemeanor. It's a felony
I went to court as a character witness for him.

And it's near impossible to prove you aren't selling it.

1)- Should he have chosen a different character witness? :p
2)- Don't THEY have to PROVE guilt?

I was one of 6. So uuhhh. Didnt seem to make a difference.

We all know how the court works. Reasonable doubt and all.

I'm not a lawyer, I was just stating it's illegal to make moonshine and ethanol.

A thug murderer would get less time.
It's amazing how Uncle Sam gets more upset and is more motivated by a little illegitimate tax money, versus violent crime, which IS a crime against someone's rights. Protecting our rights and the border is their damned job.

I posted a thread to this regard earlier this week (in Tortuga). The city of HP is engaged in a traffic citation for revenue campaign while there are several hundred incidents of violent crime being committed every month.

NoWay!
I had to get that out of my system, I'll see my way to the door...

I have used one of these about 5-6 years ago for making essential oils and distilled water. Add your heat source and water source for cooling the condenser. Nothing wrong with stainless steel but cooper does scrub a lot of the "bad" stuff off for better flavors. Plus I have seen the one below in action for fuel puposes. Your looking around 190-195 which is really good for a home setup. The more chambers, and better cooling in the condenser will get you closer to 200 which is pure. But I'm not so sure you can get 200 on anything small scale

You can own them for that purpose or get a permit to make your own corn gas. besides that whatever else is up to you. Will the law show up the moment you plug everthing in and run it. No. Just understand now that the TTB for these does get your info to send up to the FEDs.

No supporting illegal activities, but you'll have to get really careless to get caught. The law is looking for the bigger players but the off chance you give them a reason to show up, well then sucks for you.

It should be the gubmints responsibility to prove you ARE selling it... you know... that whole innocent until proven guilty thing that is SUPPOSED to be the cornerstone of jurisprudence in this country...

Take taxes away and we can go back to living freely in the open.

If you’re going to produce your own likker you should be prepared for the crown to get upset about the lost tax revenue. What your definition of being prepared means is up to interpretation.

Home distilling, even for personal use is illegal. It shouldn't be. But it is.
Home brewing beer was illegal until deregulation under Reagan.
