Got an acer chromebook 11. Turned it on, put my router info in the boxes, it says I'm connected, yet I can't get online! I cant sign into my google account from the acer, but can from kindle fire. I can only do the most basic tasks by signing in as "guest", have been to forums for chromebook and thru about 8 hours of trying everything they and the web advised...nothing!
Their next step is to go to another location and see if my cbook connects there.
My router is new as of Saturday, and my kindle and printer are fine! I just don't get it.
Pics of some screens I'm seeing,:

can you do a generic search on the internet via any browser?

What am I searching for?
If you mean can I get online from my chromebook, no. I'm going to take it somewhere soon and see if it connects. Maybe somewhere in Raleigh Saturday, since I'll be there in the afternoon. If it connects from outside of my house, I have no idea what that means, but the gurus at the cbook forum said that's what I need to try next.
I should be able to, I'm online now on kindle! I must be doing SOMEthing wrong, but I did the same things I did when setting up printer and kindle with the new router.
It's maddening! Thanks for responding.

I am not familiar with Chromebooks but could imigine that the generic account "guest" may have limited functionality.

Have you created a user account on the Chromebook?
Guest is the only way I can get anything done, since the thing won't let me sign in to my google account. Can't create a new account, either. So I can't even register the machine.
I can't do anything till I figure out why it won't let me get online. Very aggravating!

What I meant was can you do a generic search on any browser for anything... as in cnn.com or even this website or anything and actually go to the website. If not, you have connectivity issues. In any case, call the manufacturer tech support. They should be able to tell you if it is a hardware issue or something else.

No, i can't get onto any site from the chromebook. I found this about DNS though. On one of the diagnostic pages it says "no functioning DNS server available".... Took a pic of it.
The reason I've not called tech support is I have bad history with windstream people, and hoped to solve this myself....
Oh well, guess it's time....

starting with acer support.

Edit...did lots of stuff with acer support, found out nothing!!!! He told me to take my chromebook to another network, and if it conncts, then my router isn't compatible with it and I'll need to contact windstream!!! Grrrrr. He said my isp will know the router I need if there's an issue.
So I'm back where I started.
I'll try another network, then deal with my isp if necessary.
Thanks to you all. There's nothing to be done right now. I appreciate all the advice!

Let is know what you discover. I would have thought someone would had an answer by now. I don't think it would be a "compatibility" issue between router and laptop, but rather a configuration issue. There are many, many settings that should be set to common defaults that allow for easy access, but you never can tell. I saw a Chromebook tonight at Wally World, but didn't have time to play with it

I saw something like that once. I was visiting family out of state and staying with a relative. He had an Apple router and for the life of me, I couldnā€™t get a non Apple device to connect to it. Thankfully it died and he got a generic one.

Just take it to the local Panera Bread or Starbucks and see if you can log on there. You wonā€™t even have to buy anything.

I didn't even try to connect at the range....the whole experience was a bit overwhelming, and I just didn't! But I'll take it somewhere soon.

I plan to do it soon. Like tomorrow!
At least I can find Panera without stressing out!
Yes, I have geographical issues!

A bit off topic, but what was this range experience you had?

Well, I drove to Raleigh, thought I was lost, but just hadn't gone far enough up the road to get to rt. 1, so not lost, but flustered. Got to TSA, very nice, looked at guns, fell in love with a Glock, met my gentlemen, shot many, many guns, realized I might not be suited for 9mm.....in all the stuff going on, forgot to check if the Chromebook would connect to the internet in the cafe.....thus finding out if it's my router or the laptop at fault!
Those are pretty much the high points! Lol.

Normally I don't chime in on tech issues since I'm slightly retarded myself but I know the answer to your issues.
Caldwell Stick and See, self adhesive targets!! Place the 10" target to the top of the machine and the answer will become obvious...
I've considered something along those lines, amidst much cursing!
I'll try it at Bonefish, that's my next outing.

New issues now.
Can't type "t",or capital m to sign into laptop. When I was able to get in early this morning, letters go missing randomly.
Mouse button zooms pages in and out.
Up and down arrows won't work a lot of the time.
I've tried various things. Got in as guest, same problem s.
Sometimes screen blinks very fast.
I've let the battery die, since I can't remove it.
I've done the refresh/power key reset.
Any ideas? On a tablet now, hard to see.

I've done the refresh button, power button. The thing comes on, then since I can't type capital m or any t, i can't sign in couldn't scroll in settings last time I was even able to get past the sign in page, so Can't do anything there.
tried to add a user, still need my password, which I can't type, due to no t and cap m

Hang in there Millie. You are doing better than I did. I have similar issues with an extender that just won't "extend" like it used to. Been so long since I messed with it I don't even remember what all didn't work but I just gave up and sit here waiting for things to finally connect.

If you did the hard reset (Refresh key + Power button), and that didnā€™t fix it, then it is a hardware problem.

Most likely the embedded controller, but Iā€™ve never replaced one.

I'll look that up. Never heard of that term.

That is one of if not the most satisfying experiences I have ever had. I had a friend who ran a computer service. When he had one that was "done for" he would bring it to my house and we put targets on them and proceeded to get some of the best stress relieve available today. Hell of a mess to clean up but tons of fun.

@ millie check for stuck keys - sounds weird but many years back i had a desktop call where lady was convinced she had a virus because of the way the computer was behaving. when i got out there it turned out she was bad about eating just above her keyboard and literally had crumbs underneath her keys causing the same erratic behavior you described in chat

full disclosure - i didnt read this whole thread cause im busy - but it doesnt cost anything to check that and its something most dont consider

hitting ctrl + n would show the same behavior you saw with new windows etc

if mi misssed something in desc above - i apologize

It might come to that!
I confess I've had thoughts about it many times today! I can go to a cousin's land and have at it!
I have some lovely fluorescent green stick-ons about 3" diameter, and a dead tree to lean the chromebook against.......
Could be fun times!:):D

Ill give you a box of 9mm ammo for it

Extender? Huh?
It doesn't apply to your problem. It is a device that catches the signal from the Wifi and shoots it on along to a location further from the base computer. My laptop doesn't pick up the regular Wifi out in my shop but the extender helped a lot, when it was working right. I probably just need to buy a $100 one instead of a $30 one.

Millie, have you tried connecting a usb keyboard to get around the key issue?
I'm just down the road if you need assistance.

I'm going to try that tonight, after I decompress a bit, thanks. I have one somewhere, need to charge it up. Smart man!

@Millie
Your keyboard is rechargeable? Usually USB keyboards get their power from the USB connection to the computer.

If you say so.
It has a cord, if I remember. I'll keep you posted.
I'm a tech moron.

And I canā€™t shoot worth a ****. ;)
I've hooked the usb keyboard to the laptop, it's only working with my fire tablet, and since I can't get past the laptop login I can't get the keyboard to work with the laptop, probably. Not sure how that works. I imagine I'd have to get into the settings to do that.
Taking a break from this now.
Thanks for the help so far, you guys.

Well, hey there from the MASSIVE and heavy Toshiba laptop. Beats the amazon fire! But it's not as easy and nice and light as my beloved Chromebook......

I'm taking that one to the Geek Squad soon. I can't deal with it any more. I found out this morning that I don't have any pics and files like I used to anyway, for unknown reasons, and so with all that gone I saw no reason not to do the powerwash. And still, I can't get into the initial login page! I can browse as a guest, but can't do much, since everything wants a PW, which I still can't type, because the capital m and the lower case t in my PW won't type! LOL.

So thanks to everyone, for all the input.

You don't need the login page if you follow the instructions I posted in the other thread

Or try this tutorial
