Cool. We were using the stuff that comes in a bag that is like a food that kills them over time. Now we use the stuff that comes in a brown plastic bottle with yellow top that is like 7 dust. Kills them instantly.

Looks like fun. But useless if your don’t get the Queen.

My method is to poke the stick as far down as it’ll go into the center of the mound, pull it out and then pour a qt of gas into the hole. Let that soak in then light it on fire.

Instant grits, they eat it the grits and swells them up and die. No, we do not use instant grits at our house, it is purchased on special for the fire ants.

Now if you want to be creative about killing the fire ants, you can always try the aluminum-pour method. You might even make some money selling the "sculptures" too

I was going to post this last night.

This is actually on my to-do list.

Yeah,
I thought maybe it would be something to do with the shockwaves, and would destroy the nest...
Nope.
Just a Wile Y Coyote solution

As you said
Dumb.

You will note that I referred to it as the "Joe Biden" approach: I thought that was fair warning.

For me a fire ant bite is worse than an average bee sting. I hate those things and have tried everything from gasoline to liquid nitrogen to cheap treatments from Lowe’s.

Unless you get the queen ... she’s deep down in the mound ... you aren't going to kill the colony. The best thing I’ve found is Advion Fire Ant treatment. It comes in a 2lb jug and I can treat 25-30 mounds with one jug. When I see one starting I just sprinkle about 1oz around the edge of the mound and leave it alone. Usually by day 3 they’re gone ... just don’t do it when it’s going to rain.

Oh yeah ... I get it for about $40 a jug of Amazon delivered to my door ...

NOTHING gets rid of them. some things kill or delay or relocate them. they'll be back.
here's what worked for me:
during a cool fall morning (~40F), dig a hole in their mound. they are sort of slow at that air temperature.
pour in two 5-gallon buckets of water. do it again the next day if the mound's rebuilt. if not, that's it.

The Amdro pellets have done good for me. I sprinkled a bag around my yard perimeter in early spring .
Haven't had any mounds show this year yet.

Get a buddy and 2 shovels.
Each of you get a big scoop from a nest and dump it on the other guys nest.
They will kill the queen in the nest they were dumped on if they can.
And they fight like hells a coming on the nest they were dumped on.

No surprise on the sting being worse than an average bee...fire ants are related to wasps and bees, both. And yes, they bite...but it's only to anchor themselves so they can repeatedly sting the sh*t out of you with their abdominal stinger. If you didn't immediately brush a fire ant off, he'd keep stinging as he walked his *ss around in a circle, centered on where his bite anchors him.

The key to effective fire ant control is NOT just spot treating their mounds. Do this and likely you'll shortly see another mound pop up near by. Spot treat the mounds AND treat your entire lawn, too.

In Goose Creek, SC, where I had shore duty several years ago, we had fire ants in the yard. I got with the neighbors on either side and told them I was treating my entire lawn for them, and I recommended they do so as well ('cause guess where they'd go?).

We all went to Lowes at the same time and treated our lawns the same weekend. No problems the rest of the summer.

Back in the 80s, Diazinon was widely available, and it put the hurst on fire ants. Today, a really effective agent is cypermethrin, similar to permethrin, which acts as a nerve agent to these critters.

That is so danged cool!

I have never had fire ants but I have had excellent luck with borax poison and ants. Either homemade or commercial like Terro. They take it back to the nest and feed it to the queen. You do have to keep the stuff out after the ants disappear, as any eggs will hatch and repopulate.

ORTHO ORTHENE

^^THIS is the One True Way to get rid of Demon Fire Ants! Just stir up the nest a bit and dust liberally on the boiling mound. The little buggers get coated in it / walk in it and when they go back down the hole,.........Curtains for the WHOLE MOUND in about 24 hours! :D:D

Just don't get it on you since it is essentially a nerve agent!

One quart of Grey Goose Vodka..
Wait 15 minutes , add 6 oz. sterilized aquarium sand.
Works wonders ...
they all get drunk and stone each other to death!

You don't even have to light it off (but it's fun). The fumes are heavier than air and will kill everything in the mound.

If you do not light it you miss out on them sounding like a bowl of rice krispys popping.
