Best dental insurance?

I'm using Delta. No opinion one way or the other.

We have Delta as well.... however I've had better luck finding a dentist and asking what the cash price would be, I had my wisdom teeth out that way with a oral surgon, Delta paid for two, he cut me a deal and paid for the other two out of pocket.

Most dental insurances have a maximum payment, if you are getting something big done do it towards the end of the year or whenever your cycle resets. Had a buddy who needed a crown, ended up up waiting like 6 months because he reached the maximum and had to wait for the next year.

We have Metlife. Personally, I don't think any dental insurance is all that great unless you don't need anything done beyond a cleaning.

And most dental insurance will cover the so called ā€œreasonable & customaryā€ which on average is 75% of what a decent dentist charges.

I find dental insurance to be pretty much a wash. Pay the premiums or pay the bills. They don't offer large amounts of coverage in my experience. Just limits of coverage that usually equal about what the premiums end up being, at least with the good group policies I have had in the past.

A mouth guard.

Brush and floss, but that is no guarantee ;)

I had Delta but state plan switched to Met Life Dental, way better.
Delta played games with a crown for my wife, approved only one for a tooth that was not as bad condition as the one that needed the crown. Nine months wasted time on phone and applications with xrays. They knew they were getting dumped by state plan so they held back.

Best dental I ever had was Blue Cross, got paid in less then five days.

My daughter needed all four wisdom extracted, w/o insurance $3,500 and with it knocked it down to $2,200.
Met Life paid half. We have family policy.

Yep and even then you only get two cleanings worth about 300.00 and have premiums about 80.00 per month.

I'll look into MetLife. I've always had bad luck with cavities. Brush twice a day, don't floss as much as I should and even as a kid, have had cavities.

I have Delta.

I'm almost the opposite. I brush once a day and stopped seeing a dentist at 18. Twenty four years later, I decided to get a dark spot on my gum checked out. Surprisingly, I had no cavaties, but unfortunately, I had periodontal disease.

Gums and teeth are good now and the insurance has been awesome. I go for cleanings every three months and I'm charged so little that I honestly couldn't tell you what I pay for each session. It seems like nothing, but I'm sure we write a check for something, occasionally.

My state health plan MetLife dental High option family $123 a month. Went to High when my daughters
needed ortho and wisdom teeth removed, plus my wife is now considered Royalty with six crowns, she needs two more soon.
Her folks never took her to a dentist when she was a kid.
Before this I only carried dental for myself and used Flex plan for the rest.
When Obama and Congress cut the flex amounts I started dental.

I will be watching this thread closely. I am retired military and have TRDP (Tricare Retired Dental Plan) It is Delta California. Uncle Sam decided to switch it all over to the FEDVIP (Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program) and I have no clue which one to choose. Most cost slightly more then what I pay now.

It all just seems like a crap shoot to me on which ever one I pick.

Go overseas to Eastern Europe and pay out of pocket. The airfare, lodging and dentist bill is usually cheaper than insurance and payments here. Over there we had done:
Root canal with cap $75.00
Panaflex x-ray plus full mouth set $3.00
Broken tooth extracted $12.00
Full cleaning and de-scaling $20.00
Cavity fixed $15.00
The savings on the 2 root canals my girlfriend had more than covered our airfare round trip, plus.
