I'm looking to replace the gas logs in my fathers house, they haven't been functional in years.

Need a set that is vent free and doesn't need power to operate.

My father is 87 with Alzheimers too so they need to be kind of idiot proof lest I end up buying him a suicide machine.

What do I need to know?

Don't buy too many btus for the space or he will have further memory loss or death. Calculate the space per capacity and do not exceed. Less is better. Have a shutoff valve installed where it cam easily be accessed. A set with a remote control would be nice as well but they will at some point give you trouble in a few years. Leak test, leak test. 15psi for 24 hours. Hire a pro with insurance and can speak more than slang and can read installation requirements. Pull the damn permit so the insurance company will pay if all goes wrong.

Going to have the gas co. install and was only thinking 30k BTU unit. I have a question about the remote, does it require power to the unit? What if the power fails?

If it has a pilot light a wall switch or remote will operate it. No power required other than batteries.

Lots of option with a price.
1. One fire output. No adjustment.
2. Turn up and down output.

For someone elderly I would make it very simple. Maybe just a wall switch or a remote with just on and off. Every elderly install on anything I do is simple and bigger visible numbers and letters.

Again the room size will determine the btu size. Small room with too big of a output is bad, bad news. I refused to hook up my Mom's gas logs after they bough them because they were too big for the room. Its a nice ornament because they cut the end off of the mantle to make it fit so they were stuck. They were mad at me but got over it.

Not to hi-jack a thread, but along the lines of gas logs. What the sets called in a fireplace with glass front, they put out way more heat than standard logs, more like a gas furnace output? I want this set up for back up heat. I don't know what to ask for when I go to look for them
