Grab a look at this collection of pics from the attempted (and brutally suppressed) revolution for freedom in Hungary in 1956. If the Russian army had not invaded, Hungary would have left the Soviet orbit and joined the west then. I first learned about this (it is not covered AT ALL in western history books) while in Switzerland studying. I remember tears coming into my eyes looking at a pic of a young woman (can't find the pic or the name now) who was later tried and hanged, along with transcripts from a radio broadcast from a college student BEGGING for help from the west as the tanks poured in. That happened 61 years ago yesterday. It was all I needed to know that Patton was right, the western leaders were pathetic, spineless, and establishment enablers and that Eisenhower was a gutless wonder. We did absolutely nothing. Didn't even raise a peep or mention it. Worse than Yalta.

They were hanged and shot by the thousands. It is heroic and tragic. Hungary today is a bastion of freedom and anti socialism in the old eastern bloc. Now you know why

Edit: I found the woman's name and story. Her name was Ilona Toth. Such a tragedy, heroism, and utter sadness......

Interesting story. Just goes to show that history is certainly told by the winners. Suppress what we don't want the world to know...

FYI: you need to fix the link to your dailynews link. It seems to be pointing to the same tinyurl as your images

When I was a teenager (late seventies), there was a guy the next town over. He ran an electronics repair shop, and he would often give me extra electronics parts. He had mechanical and electrical degrees. He and his wife and child walked out of Hungary during all that. That brought a somewhat warmed-up cold war home to me...

They are out there for sure! History is no longer taught in our schools, IMHO.

True history was replaced about 20 years ago with "The History According to How We in Charge Think it Should Have Gone".

Quite honestly it started with the history of the Civil War and then it encompassed other portions of history. Only the sanitized and approved portions of any historical event are taught in most schools nowadays.

Edit: History is supposed to be like the news. The books and the teacher give you the facts and allow you to make up your own mind about what was right and wrong, good and evil.

History books have instead become like CNN. They are a stylized version of the truth that has been shaped to meet a narrative and filled with far more editorial than cold hard facts. Then the teachers editorialize further.

Simple, dont use the book.
None of us asked for new books, barely use the old ones, but we got new books. Ive used my new US books exactly 3 times so far since we got them LAST August.
In World I used them only for vocabulary.

I agree, the books arent too good (and I'll look and see how much is in the newest book about Hungarian revolution tomorrow).

Collect the old, imperfect books.

Makes the timing & circumstances of Patton's death seem a bit odd, eh? I think the .gov wanted him to go away.
Of course. He was a loose cannon. He served his purpose, and it was time for him to die in an automobile accident.

When I was in San Augustinillo Mexico (a little town on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca), I went into a restaurant early Sunday a.m. It was not open, but they told me I could sit and watch the ocean and wait. The owner came out about 15 mins later and began talking. He asked me if I had tasted the coffee and I told him the girls told me they weren't yet open. He snorted and marched in to the kitchen, said a few stern words and came back out with coffee. It was literally the best stuff I ever had. Rich, aromatic JET FUEL. He proudly told me he grew it himself on his small farm up past Potchutla (I visited there later, at his invitation).

His name was Sandor (pronounced Shan dour) and he was Hungarian. He had been a distance runner. Not good enough for Olympics, but good enough to compete all over Europe. He said "they were socialists then. So, one day I had a track meet in Italy. I was running a marathon. I just deviated from the course and KEPT RUNNING. I did not know what to expect, but I knew I was never going back." He became a Canadian citizen, but chose to live in Mexico. He came on vacation, and for several years would go back during the summer and do sheetrock contracting, but now has paid for the hotel and runs it. It is the Paraiso El Pescador.

One of my friends lived through those times as a child. She never understood why USA did not intervene.
