We are taking my eldest out to dinner tonight for her 18th B'day. She has requested Angus Barn. I am always underwhelmed with their food. Anybody have a dish there they really like? I think I 've had the prime rib and steak of some sort every time I am there. Any sneaky good menu items? Must haves?

Sorry, only been there once. My only suggestion is to take home a pound cake because it makes awesome French toast that next weekend day.

The few times I have been there I look at everything but got my old standard rib-eye ... but I do know for the dessert people rave about their Chocolate Chess but I love their crepe brûlée and highly recommend that!

I had rack of lamb there once that was spectacular. I don't know if it is a regular menu item.

Last time there I had prime rib that was so-so but, horseradish sauce helps.

Yes, my wife likes that pie, but we have a cake waiting at home.

I've only been twice. I had filet mignon and both were awesome. My gf had ribs twice, first ones were fall off the bone, the second she had to send back.

I’d try and convince her to go the 42 st oyster bar. Lol AB was not as good as the hype when I’ve been there.

My son served there for years, the really expensive (the Tomahawk rocks) stuff is good. For the $$$ I'm unimpressed with the food and atmosphere.
Rey's in Cary beats them hands down, pricey but the food's excellent and they treat you like a king.

Angus Barn is our favorite place. I almost always get the filet au poivre, but I have found the ribs to be outstanding. And if for some reason something is not up to par, they have always fallen all over themselves to make it right. Their bleu cheese wedge salad is one of the best I have had, and my wife raves over their French onion soup. They have outstanding desserts. Plus, I usually end up having a cigar in their Meatlocker smoking lounge. Hope you have a better experience. If you're buying, I would be happy to escort your family in your place. :)

Go somewhere else... Angus barn sucks. They're living off a rep they no longer deserve.

Want steak? Go to Vinnie's. Want a great meal in general? Go to J. Betski's or St Jaques...

The steak is a solid "OK." The wine selection is freaking spectacular (no help to your daughter, though). The petit is my favorite, but still no better than most steakhouses.

It is the daughter's B'day so we let her choose. IMO Peak City grill here in Apex is better, but have you ever tried to convince an 18 year old of anything? :(

Tell her she's still a child and has no choice in the matter.

Then take her to Second Empire.

Another guy with no kids? Or wife? Unfortunately that would not produce harmony in my life. My plan is to shut up. Eat something. Get home with no drama. Pour a drink and relax in my man cave.

Angus Barn. That's the deal. She'll probably order a steak.

I understand that she's probably heard of Angus Barn before and maybe that's why she wants to go there, but she's missing out on other just as good, perhaps better, places to go eat and have a nice experience at.

I go there primarily because they're the only place I can get Aspall (Dry Suffock Cider that I found in England), it's a must have for me, and I usually arrive before my reservation so I can head up to the bar upstairs and have a couple prior to dinner.

I generally go with the filet and lobster combination. The large lobster is a lot of food, but they are better small.

Second Empire is another excellent choice, but if she's requesting Angus Barn, just stick with her request.

We went there for Xmas dinner a few years in a row. Haven't gone recently. She's been to Sullivans, Reys, Ruth's Chris and Jimmy V's. She's a young woman. It's all about appearances and atmosphere. Just like her college tours. "The campus is pretty." Me - Do they have a good Bio or Pre Med program compared to X, Y and Z? Her - "The dorms are cute."

Me - Slams head against wall.

Yeah, you can't tell us anything when we're that young.... I feel so bad for my poor parents and all I put them through! But I did get the chance to tell them they were right about 90% of what they told me....

Maybe you'd like to babysit our younger one some weekend? I'll bring her by so you can be miserable too.

My friend that owns a motorcycle dealer asked me, when we found out what we were having, if we were having a boy or a girl. After I said a girl, he said, "You'll love it, up until they become teenagers, then you'll hate your life."

She's pretty good and level headed, but she's still an 18 year old. Can't teach experience. But she should look at my awesome body and know when it comes to food and booze I got skills.

LOL. I thought my parents were the worst retards in the universe, for several years....I still cringe about that....

Wife & I have always been very happy with AB. It's been our anniversary dinner spot for a few years. The French Onion soup is incredible & their oysters are pretty damned good as well (wife & I usually knock out a dozen on the half shell as an appetizer).

42nd Street is the only place I go for oysters.

If we straight up just want oysters, it's Full Moon in Jamestown for us, but as a starter with a double Macallan 16 (neat) before my filet, AB's oysters will definitely get it done.

I like their prime rib and the chateaubriand is usually pretty tender. And you get side with the meat unlike Ruth Chris where every frickin' item is a separate cost

My wife took me there telling me I had to try it.
Ordered a nice steak, ate half of it and half of that was 1/2" of gristle, not fat. I politely asked the waiter for another steak or a different option. He took it back, the cook came to the table and informed me I didn't know what I was talking about.
We haven't been back. It's too bad, we would have liked a nice restaurant closer to home.

I have probably been there 5 or 6 times with no issues. I think I've only ordered steak once. I had boar once. Venison. Some odddball ravioli. I usually order their specials or things I don't see other places. I even had my first ever grits there.

Just take her to Apex Wings and be done with it. It's close to you, they have beer specials. Sit in Britany's section. She's wildly entertaining.
