Could be the places I frequent or maybe I have 'SUCKER' on my forehead.
"Can I ask you a question?", you just did. "Can you help me out, (insert BS Story)"

I always reply "Funny I was going to ask you the same thing" and they leave with a grin.

The other night about 2AM at my local Sheetz (Raleigh PD and Wake Sheriff always hangout )
and I pull in to get some gas, guy with almost new Tundra on other side of pumps,
says hello and tells me he has the wrong credit card with him and if I can help him out,
as he talks he walks closer to me with his right hand in jacket pocket, I slowly grab the gas nozzle
and keep it low ready as if I was going to put it back in the pump, was only getting $20 gas.

Told him just mailed off the child support (my BS story) and I too am tapped out until the end of the month,
they have an ATM inside if that helps.
He apologizes and says he understands, sorry to bother me as he turned and walked away.

He ended up inside and made a gas purchase and I stayed to eat there.

Next time I am pulling into the pump without any other vehicles near it.

I tell them I don't carry cash and all I have is a credit card. If they ask if I could help them out with pumping some gas on my card I ask them if they have anything to barter with; tools, guns, high end booze, maybe their boots if they are the right size...

I try to tell them that way we don't owe each other anything. They usually leave. ;)

If the bums want to borrow a dollar I ask them if they have change for a twenty. They usually do.

I was sitting in my Jeep the other day about to go in Chick-Fil-A and a women walks up and asks for $5 so she could buy a sandwich..."my car broke down, been here two days, I'm hungry". I reply that I don't give out money but I'd be happy to buy her something when I go in. She says "no thanks" and walks off to hit up a lady that had just walked out. Lady gives her money and she walks into CFA and stands there looking out the window. When the lady that gave her money had left she turns around and walks right out without buying food.

I yell "I guess you lost your appetite huh" and she flips me off with a smile.

People suck.

The only time I did anything like that was in 2004, I was driving to Pensacola for Navy duty. I stopped at a gas station about 30 miles this side of Atlanta, on the other side of the pump was a man and woman standing beside a motorcycle. He asked if I could pay for three or four dollars in gas to get to Atlanta, he didn't have any cash or plastic. He even asked if I wanted to look in his tank to make sure he wasn't lying about being out of gas. The woman looked ticked. Plausible story; who asks for "three of four dollars" of gas? Sure.

But that was it. I have been asked maybe a dozen times. Usually I just give them a look and a stern "no" and they move along.

When I left Denver, they had recently come up with that I thought was a hilarious way to deal with panhandlers in downtown. They installed things that looked like parking meters but accepted donations for the homeless missions downtown. I would have loved to see the look on someone's face when they asked for money and the other person said, "Sure thing little buddy!" and put money in the meter and turned the knob.

This gives me an idea! I need to write up a simple loan contract and keep a copy in the glove box. The next bum that asks me for money I say sure, but you will have to sign a contract. I'll need a drivers license or some form of ID, Sir. I bet that would piss them off to no end!

Seems non stop around W-S.
Gas stations, any quick food place, Wal-Mart. Got nothin for 'em. Seems usually someone else does. Feed the animals...

and collateral.

1AM Different Sheetz, two dudes and women in car need some cash for alternator at AutoZone, told them autoAuto closed at Midnight.

You never know. I work in fast food. I had one of our local homeless guys hit me up for a meal. He was stone sober so I paid for it out of my own pocket.

Three days later Terry was dead. As he was walking down the street someone came up behind him and pushed him. He fell in the roadway and hit his head. He never woke up again. 38 years old.

RIP Terry.

I did put $5 gas in this young girls car few years ago,
Where she was headed no stations open at 2AM.
She offered to mail me the cash, no need.

Situational awareness. You need to spot the likely scum bags before they are too close. Then you can't make eye contact, and you may need to conveniently walk away or turn your back at the exact moment. Turning your back is risky so I'd suggest walking somewhere with a purpose. Don't linger. And go inside or somewhere even if you don't need to.

Or maybe people just don't approach me because it is obvious I am an a-hole? Who knows?

I've put gas in people's car before, but never handed them cash. Once, at a stoplight, I had a woman hit me from behind about 3mph, and she was hysterical thinking she hurt me and offer me cookies and a hug. I took the hug because she was hot af.
I knew not to go back to where she worked for cookies because it would end up costing me ALOT in alimony :D

Damn I'd have loved some of those cookies.

I'd like a bumper sticker that said something like bums and hippies can both die.

I usually tell them that I am filling up on my corporate card so I can't add anything to it. It gets worse as we get near the holidays. If they look even semi-legit I might give them a $5 Sheetz gift card but never cash.

Went in Sheetz for a monster and guy asks me to buy him a beer. “Naw man I ain’t buying you a beer”. Then he says he’s hungry and doesn’t have money and wants me to buy him a sandwich or something. Again I said no. I get in line and he’s right behind me. I get up to pay and he goes to the other register, pulls out a wad of cash and pays for the food he had ordered before I came in.

I filled a guy’s tank once. His rattletrap car really did run out of gas just as they pulled in and he really did have a pregnant wife in the car on a hot day. He started crying and gave me a hug before he drove off.

A few weeks back, some crazy looking lady approached me at a gas station in Carrboro. I forget what she wanted. It may have been a ride or something. I said if you need help, I'd be happy to call the cops for you. She scowled and quickly had some other place to be.

My dad, a mechanic, was a good man but there wasn’t a day I didn’t hear the n-word. Yet every time someone broke down while passing through, the Highway Patrol would call my dad because they knew he couldn’t leave a family of any race on the side of the road. Many times I would see him tow them in at any hour of the night, fix their car, with his own parts. They never had money but always promised to send the money. Dad knew it was a lie but he had a soft spot for kids.

When I was in college, my gf and I lived in the upstairs (converted to an apartment) of a house and a friend of ours was getting the downstairs ready to rent. We spent the evening painting and Lynn and I went to bed leaving Ralph to continue painting. The next morning we heard that a super drunk guy came to the back door and asked Ralph, "hey man, are there any girls in there?" Ralph told him no and he said thanks and then went to the basement door, two feet over, and started knocking on it.

With the look I keep on my face most people are scared shitless to even speak to me let alone ask for anything. Works every time...
I think I have that unapproachable look too. Never asked for anything, never spoken to in elevators. It's a gift....

In the early 1980's I was living in Evanston, Wyoming but drove the 80 miles down to Salt Lake City at every opportunity. Once I drove down there sipping from a bottle of wine and had about half a bottle left when I got there. I parked near a bar I often frequented and as I got out of my vehicle a wino approached me with the usual story about needing money for a bus ticket to see his mother or some such. I told him I couldn't help him with that, but had a half bottle of wine he was welcome to and handed it to him in a paper bag. He was still standing there slack-jawed as I walked away. Back then at least, open containers were OK in Wyoming but frowned on in Utah, and it seemed like a good idea to get rid of it--normally I don't give squat to the stew bums.

A while back, I think this year, 2 guys from one of the major car books[I get 'em all], left LA in a Bentley Continental going to Nashville without 1 penny! They made it all the way without paying for gas, rooms, or food. AND without IDing themselves. It was a good article. Lotsa good folks out there.

Just start pretending like you're hearing voices: talk back to them; twitch your head; stare vacantly; keep muttering "but it would be wrong, we could get in trouble."

Sort of like 1:07:00 ff from Dutch

I get the "beg" a lot at gas stations especially Sheetz. I just say thats the oldest line in the book. Last person that i encountered was obviously a meth head. So sad. If they flip me off they get a very loud FU and if they even act like their coming back in my face, i tell them they are not going to like what happens next. I havent had any takers.
