As of December 1, 2018, vehicle emissions testing will no longer be required in 26 North Carolina counties. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has certified the removal of the counties from the state’s inspection and maintenance program after receiving final approval from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles will implement the changes through licensed emissions inspection sites in the following counties: Brunswick, Burke, Caldwell, Carteret, Catawba, Chatham, Cleveland, Craven, Edgecombe, Granville, Harnett, Haywood, Henderson, Lenoir, Moore, Nash, Orange, Pitt, Robeson, Rutherford, Stanly, Stokes, Surry, Wayne, Wilkes and Wilson.

Vehicle safety inspections are still required for registration renewal in all 100 counties.

Now all those stations have an expensive computer that nobody needs. I bet they will have a hard time trying to sell them.

Diesels have never been subject to emissions inspection in NC. I love taking mine in and asking for a "Safety" inspection. Lights, horn, wipers, done.
Is it the same $30?

HonestlyI don’t care about the money so much as the time to do it. They should send me a checklist and I’ll self certify.

$13.70 I believe.

Thanks! I (clearly) had not known that!

For that the shops probably don’t even want the business.

$13.20 is what the State gets, the shop gets to keep 50 cents. I always flip my guy a 20 since he's hassle-free and good people.
But I love my mechanic. He comp's me on all kinds of stuff...fixes flats for free, OBD scans free, etc. and the shop is all gun guys.

I think this is wrong.

Emissions testing is something the .gov should actually be doing and protecting the environment. Even the staunchest of libertarians can't say that tailpipe pollution doesn't impact others, it's not like you're bottling your pollution and storing it somewhere, you're dumping it on everyone and it does impact them.

Just buy 88 and older. My 90 only has one inspection left!

Negative, unless they changed it recently, 35 years and older are exempt. 25-30 years old just gets you into the "classic" nada book at the tax office, bend over!

Yeah man I always take care of my mechanics as well, finding techs that are good, honest and fair are getting harder and harder to find.
