Saturday night I was in the garage working on the vacuum cleaner. Remmy (one of our pits) was laying by my feet. I notice his ears and head popped up. He got up and walked to the edge of the garound following the sidewalk to the front door. I followed making it about half way to the corner when I heard Remmy start barking in a tone I've never heard. By the time I could see what was going on I heard another different kind of barking and knew it wasn't him. " Oh ____" I thought. Another dog had came in to our yard, maybe spooked Remmy. Remmy wasn't having it. They were in to it before I could grab Remmy.

Being the idiot at the time, I grabbed them both by the collar and pulled at them both. Remmy had the dog and wasn't letting up. I yelled at Remmy and pulled hard. I split them up. I had my steel toe boots on and kicked the dog in the ribs which make it reevaluate it's life decisions. I bring Remmy in, he's licking me all over my face. I think it's him bleeding because his underside is white (Blue and White). Then it notice it's me bleeding. Sometime while getting them to split up I manage to get bite, not once but twice! Both hands.. Went to the urgent care to talk about rabies shot and get it cleaned out and meds. A/C calls me later because the doctors have to legally report it.

Next day, I did end up finding the owners. They where nice and apologized. They were about the same age as my wife and I. Basically told me to fix their darn fence, we also came to a agreement. I saw the paper work for their dog and it is all up to date on it's shots. Called the vet Monday morning, to confirm.

Now there is Louisville slugger bat by that corner of the garage. Next time I'll come out swinging

I taught Remmy to be protective of my wife, for when I'm not home. This is the first time he has defended his home and me. I must say I'm proud of him. Both dogs are fine....just me that got messed up.

two large open wounds and multiple teeth punchers

Told people at work I'm gearing up for the holiday shopping season.

In addition to the Slugger I’ll suggest a decent sized fire extinguisher. A good sized CO2 or dry chem will most likely break up any fight ... and can be swung if needed.

I worry about this since my 2 are always outside with me but they’re no pits. I’ve heard of too many times people getting torn up trying to break up dogs, so the dog that comes on my property will get a few strikes before I use another kind of striker.

Glad you’re OK despite the holes in your hands.

Glad you are more or less GTG that is gonna be sore for a minute. I got between a big bluetick and a coon one night and blue did not discriminate between fur and fat boy. Remmy done good, knows thats his job. Our pit passed away earlier this year and I still miss her. Hope it all works out well for ya.

Dunno how old your pit is or how purebred APBT he is (and even then, there's no telling how game the dog is), but a young game dog that hasn't fought previously and gets into its first fight may realize this is its true calling (which it is), and may be jonesing for more fights. Again, may not apply to your dog if not pure-ish APBT or not game, or old enough to be past all that.

I don't believe their true calling is fighting. We have three, one appears to off been a bait dog no way to confirm, they have one of the strongest desires to please the alpha. This history goes back to being protectors (farm animals and family), work dogs. Wasn't until man exploited their behavior for evil. But everyone has this opinions on the subject matter on dogs.

Glad your ok and hope it heals ok. A water hose works wonders as well to break them up. If you go the fire extinguisher route you might look for a water one since it would be less mess. One is basically a huge super soaker just do not leave it out where it can freeze as they will crack the shell and leak.

Damn.
I worry about that a little. The fence on out back property line belongs to the neighbor. was put in cheap and poorly done by a previous owner. Current owner said he is not doing anything to fix the fence even through his dogs are trying the rip it to get to our dogs. We can't touch the fence because it is a foot or 2 into the easement and not on our property. Technically, the previous owner screwed up because the fence was supposed be built on his side of the utility easement.
Fortunately it seems his dogs are just loud about wanting to play. Our 2 love playing in a big pack.

It's hard to break up fighting dogs. The CO2 extinguisher is a good idea but they can cause frostbite. I've broken large tree limbs over dogs. I've kicked them to no avail.

Bull baiting is what the pit was made for. I dont think that makes it a terribly mean or a bloodthirsty dog. The little rascals had a pit.

I've had four Rotties in 25+ years, three of them were never dog aggressive until another dog injured them and flipped that switch to 'on'.

Ouch! Glad you’re (mostly) ok!

I would put up my own fence.

My dad was a dog trainer, and we owned a dog kennel growing up. Big dogs. GSD, Dobies, Rotts, etc.

Saw some horrible dog fights, some with multiple dogs. My dad used a big hose with a big brass nozzle on it. He'd wade right in swinging it, and most effective: spraying it in their ears. They didn't like that at all and it worked pretty good.

Have had quite a few bites, and my dad had scars all over! Not fun at all.

Can you report the easement violation?

Glad everything turned out well and you didn't need the rabies shots.

Breaking up a dog fight ain’t for the faint of heart. My own 2 pit bulls got in an epic brawl last year and I made the mistake of trying to pry the jaws open with my fingers. Real dumb.

Got a deep puncture and lost a thumb nail. My sister lent me a DVD on how to deal with canine aggression and how to break up a fight effectively. I hope we never have to deal with that again.

I posted Sunday about a dog bite I got Sunday morning; good chomp on my right index and middle finger. My pics would rival that, but my bites were all punctures. Dog bites are no bueno, and breaking up fights is always a risky proposition.

Breaksticks are good for breaking up a fight, especially for getting a game pit bull to release (the more game they are, the more they will ignore kicks, punches, water, and other methods of persuasion).

Also, a lot of people's instincts are to pull the dogs away from each other in an attempt to get the dog(s) to release by pulling it away from the other dog, but this just causes more tearing.

No, the bull baiting dog was larger. Once bull baiting was banned, they started breeding for a smaller dog that could fight for longer, which resulted in the APBT.

I dont think that makes it a terribly mean or a bloodthirsty dog.
Real game dogs are going to be animal aggressive (and can pose a danger to small children, especially those the dog hasn't been heavily socialized with); they are also going to be very human friendly (which was required because owners would get into the pit to grab their dog, so human aggression was highly undesirable in a game dog). Of course not every dog bred for gameness is actually going to be game, just as not every non-pure APBT or pit mix is going to be totally lacking game.

None of this means the dog is "mean"; it's an animal with certain inherent traits. Border collies herd, pointers point, and real APBTs fight. And the owner plays a huge role, but the idea that it's all about the owner is nonsense that only an equalist could believe. Just as with humans, genetics do matter. Any parent of multiple children will know this by virtue of the different personalities of kids raised in very similar environments.

I have multiple children all bred for baiting like a pit.

We bought a set of break sticks after this fight happened. Me and my wife should be more prepared if they decide to act like UFC dogs again.

My larger dog didn’t respond to any hits or choke attempts. We ended up getting them apart by closing their heads in the back door. We had some nice vet bills, both dogs needed stitches.
