Helen, GA

Go to Unicoi Park, just outside of town and take the hike to Anna Ruby Falls.

You can get a very good meal in town at Paul's Steakhouse next to the river.

Is that the place they call Little Germany or something?

My family used to have our reunions there every couple of years. Love that area! Hoping we have another one there in the near future (Savannah next year, but no thanks).

I used to ride my motorcycle up that way a couple times a year. Great riding in that area and some good places to eat. If you ride, head up to Suches and check out T.W.O. (Two Wheels Only) only campground.

My wife and I rode through and stayed a night in Helen on our Honeymoon. It rained that day. As a matter of fact, it rained at some point for 5 days on that trip. She didn't complain once. Yeah, I got a good one...

I've got over 320 years of family buried in those mountains. I grew up near there, and when I go, I plan to have my ashes scattered over Yonah Mountain. I thought about having them scattered into the headwaters of the Chattahoochee which is just outside Helen, but that would mean some of them would travel down to Atlanta, and so I decided against that. I hate Atlanta.

I spent my honeymoon in Helen in 1978. Met Billy "Beer" Carter in a bar there. He was as looped as we were. Great little Bavarian Village. Went back a couple times in summer over the next few years. They had a huge balloon race & St. Bernard parade in those days.

I guess it is too cold to go tubing down the river. We did that several years ago with the HOG chapter.

Went several years for professional conferences that were held in the park. Neat little town.

Dang it Geezer, I live just a couple of hills over from Helen.
I might have slipped over and let you buy me a beer.
Have fun and enjoy the food. lots of good German food to be had around there.

Just saw this thread! I liked Helen.

Met a buddy and his Dutch wife there in ... 2012?? Did the Anna Ruby Falls hike, had a great dinner at a restaurant (forgot the name).

Pretty little town in a nice area. Thanks for the post & pics.

I'm gonna have to plan a trip. We have taken a liken to the teutonic kultur pretty hard these last few years. Makes sense, because I'm probably 50% Kraut and my wife even more.
We had to settle for a couple of trips to the Waldhorn in Pineville for this year's Ofest. The ultimate goal in the next 5 years is Dusseldorf and Munich for the real deal.

Ich mag bier. Ein bier, bitte!

Next time we will make it happen.

While in college (Athens, GA) Barbara and I took a trip to Anna Ruby Falls and I decided to hike up the falls, Some how got lost back in the woods. Following the ridge line covered in leaves, slip down the hill, lost my check book. Started following the creek and made it to the parking lot but on the wrong side of the creek. Decided I was going to jump from boulder to bolder to get across. When I hit the second one I buster my ass and the telephoto lens on my camera. About 10 minutes later Barbara come walking back to the parking lot wanting to know where I have been.

Nothing grand. A shop owner followed me outside to accuse me of shoplifting (I wasn't) and it turned into a shouting match that drew out more shop owners that shouted "stay out of Frankenmuth" as we walked off. Friggin weirdo yankees.
Hmmm, Yankees. Is it still illegal to shoot them?
