Hey guys,

Just trying to get some input on a possible new toy. Wanted to get a decent bolt rifle in .17... Just haven't decide on HMR or WSM.
Looking into getting a target plinker/crow popper.
Please share your thoughts on possible rifles and which .17

thanks

I have the 17 hmr and I love it. Zeroed the scope in my yard at 25 yards. Took it out to the catfish ponds a friend manged. Took two milk jugs full of water with me. Set them on the ground at one end of the ponds and drove to the other end. Asked my buddy how far away we were. He said 300 + yards. Told him to watch and see where the bullet hit so I would know how to adjust. Put the crosshairs on the cap of the jug and sent the first round thru the jug. It is a blast to shoot.

Why buy one when you can have two at twice the price. ;)?

I think your friend was a little off on distance lol. 17 drops big time at that distance, more than a milk jug.

But, the 17 is a badass little round. I had one years ago, and loved it

Picked up a .17 HMR off of @Cowboy on here. Its a little Savage bolt. I bought it just because I didn't have a .17. I love that thing. Went to a friends house and they were shooting a 10" gong at 175 yds. I told them I had it in the truck but had never shot it so one of the guys ran and got it. That thing was ringing the gong every shot. I could have sold it three times. Lol

Could be. Maybe it was closer to 200. Drop at 200 is only 9.1. Milk jug is 10 in and maybe I held a little above the cap (memory ain't what it used to be)but the point was the first shot hit the jug.

Chart says 40 inches at 300yrds. In fact the kenetic energy at 300 yards is less than a baseball at 90mph. You could catch it.

Another Savage 93bvss owner, love this guy great for rabbit and squirrels and maybe one coyote..... I have wanted a 17wsm for a long time but got to spend a half day back home in CO on friends .17 Hornet on some pdogs and I think I'm even more in love.

The 204 is a cool round, shot 1 a few years ago. Really looking into the wsm pretty hard now, just gotta make up my mind

Savage 93R17 BVSS is what I have. Zeroed at 100 yards.. It is very accurate and fun to shoot. Plus it doesn't cost a lot to shoot a lot... Good luck on that decision...

If you like shooting really small groups with a fast bullet the hmr will not disappoint. Works well for squirrels but damages meat pretty badly. Works great for ground hogs. Reasonable to shoot but so accurate you find your self having to find smaller targets or move them farther away to have a challenge with it. Wind will play with it at distance though if really windy. As others mention savage 9317 is a good inexpensive package for one just get a decent scope to see the small hole if your eye sight is like mine.

Shootem in the head. Of course my FIL would complain about that(if he was still living) cause he liked the brains. Lol
