The little one is a 1929 Remington Model 24.
The larger one is a 1951 Remington Model 241.
They both use the same tang peep sight, which is hard to find and expensive.
I found one for the Model 24 a couple of years ago, and last week I found one for the 241.

Installed the sight and took the 241 out back to give it a try. Shot once at a resetting steel squirrel target, hit dead center. The noise rousted up a squirrel and he crawled along a limb back behind and above the target. Shifted me sights, shot once... squirrel fell off the limb DRT!

JM Browning designed the world's first semi-auto .22 rifle, which is now the Browning SA-22. In 1922, FN in Belgium bought the world wide rights for it, except in North America. Remington made 'em from 1922 to 1951. Then FN started selling the SA-22 in the US.

So, my 241 is one of the last that Remington made. Very few serial numbers are higher.

Both cycle CCI Quuiet-22 ammo, and keep 'em real quiet!

How did you cook the squirrel????

Back when I still hunted and my FIL was still living we skinnedem and left the heads on. Cooked them in a stew and made gravy. Watch my FIL crack the skull open on many a one and eat the brains. Good ole days long gone.

Saw my grandma eat squirrel brains that way. People who lived through the 1930s were far less picky with food than I am.

I've always loved the Browning's I've handled.

So, THAT's how the zombie apocalypse is going to start, squirrels. :D

Brains are real good. But i might stick to pork brains after reading that article.

Eating brains and spinal remains of any animal species is the best way to pick up a prion disease (MCD, scrapie, CJD, kuru, etc). That said, live life how you wanna; squirrel and pig brains are both tasty and prion diseases are fascinating to study.

Love squirrel. Grandma'd either fry 'em lightly in bacon grease or make squirrel 'n dumplin's. Tree rat, fresh caught catfish & the odd cottontail rabbit were dinner table favorites.

Don't tell the missus, but I'm fiendin' to shoot the groundhog at the end of our little road & fry that fat bastard up.

Very cool old .22s, too. :D

With all due respect, FN was the best thing that happened to Browning. And, Browning was the best thing that happened to FN. Since their first encounter, Browning has sold many designs to FN, which sometimes would end up being licensed to a US manufacturer, starting with the FN1900 (which no US maker wanted to touch with a 10ft pole until they saw an European maker selling more of those than they could make. You know, like Winchester and lever action).

Certainly true, that... which is why I appreciate these relatively rare non-Winchester nor-FN rifles Made In USA From A Browning Patent.

There's another from the same era... anyone know which it is?

Hint: it's a Remington, and another first worldwide

Do you mean the Model 8?

Yes!

The World's First Semi-auto Hunting Rifle, mildly popular in Europe. Actually, it was a tough sell, in spite of the 35 Remington cartridge.

"In Belgium it was known as “La Carabine Automatique Browning”, in Germany it was the “Selbstladebüchse Browning Kaliber 9mm”, but in the United States we know it simply as the F.N. 1900."

Browning also designed his first semi-auto pistol in 1900, which became the FN Model of 1900. JMB was busy at the turn of the century.

Yeah, I should hang out there... I visit once in a while. Vintage Rimfire Rifles have been a lot of fun to discover and shoot.

Yes, I've been bit too! Specially 30-50's Winchesters

Found a companion for the old Remingtons... T series ('56 to '61) Browning SA-22 made in Belgium. Looks identical to the Remington 24, except it has 3/8" .22 scope grooves on top of the receiver.
