I've been shooting the G19 for a while, and have noticed something that might be a disadvantage in competitions. (No, not the sights, and not the trigger...those are fine so far!)

When I hit the button to release the magazine, I have to get a different grip on the gun in order to reach and press it. I've tried stretching my thumb around to it, but I can't do it and keep my grip.

Is there a remedy for this? Will I just have to basically lay the gun across my hand to release a magazine with my right hand, or even use my left thumb to do it? That won't be good in a match, when trying to get another magazine out and ready to go!! LOL. (I have to change my grip with the 1911 9mm as well.)

I'm sure you guys will have some info for me, as you always do! Thanks in advance.
If this has already been covered somewhere, I must have missed it.

They make extended mag realeases. There are different sizes. Some are much bigger than others. The Hyve technologies is one of the biggest I’ve seen.

Thanks, I'll look them up...I knew you guys would have info for me!

Is your G19 a Gen 3 or 4? The Gen 4 mag release is"bigger".

Gen 4. It's not exactly the size, but the placement. It's really far forward on the grip and hard for my thumb to get to. (Not the best explanation, but the best I can do...lol.)

BEWARE!!!! I have seen several Good shooters here using Kydex holsters and running Glocks with extended mag releases go for their guns and when grabbing them in earnest the mag release hits the holster and they draw out a One Shot Gun with the mag laying on the ground.

One thought. Not really a solution, but you were running 1911's in matches and they require a repositioning of the grip in your hand to drop the mag, reload, and re-engage your targets. This Glock is not so different for you in that regard.

That said, and not to get you headed down another rabbit trail, there are other guns that might not require that, but I'd stick with what you've got.

Well, if I get this thing changed out, I'll have to be sure I get a holster made that can accommodate it, I guess. I don't really see how else I can fix the fact that I can't push the button without changing my grip or doing some other weird thing with it...
You can have a look at how I'm doing it next time I'm there, and tell me what you think. I do remember at my match, I was told to keep my grip the same, but it's the same issue with both guns...it was never really something I thought about, I just laid the gun across my palm and hit the button with my left thumb...not very elegant or fast! I need to get it dealt with before fall, so I can hit the matches and be ready to go....ad maybe shave a second or 2 off my massive time! LoL. Did you see the score sheet?

So, you're saying I might not get any benefit from a new button? I have gotten used to doing the "grip shuffle" with the 1911, so I guess I can do it with the g19. I was just hoping there was a way for a lady with a short thumb to maybe get a button that can be reached without all the contortions. Lol.

As to other guns, yeah, I know of one such gun that I didn't have to torque around, but I have 2 9mm already and not ready to get another one....not yet! Lol. I'll keep working on the guns I have and see if I can learn to reach farther....

The skinnier grip of the G48 that you were interested in would probably be less of a problem.

It was really nice. But I needed to fire a gun a lot before choosing, and Jim's didn't have one to rent. And a skinnier grip isn't necessarily a good thing for me, as they tend to knock my thumb knuckle. And the G19 was the gun I wanted at the start of all this back in August. So maybe I'll just have to learn how to work around the button issue. (It's not like a second or 2 is really going to help me in a match at this early stage, and probably never....I'm old and fat and slow....not much help for that!)

Reverse the mag release to "lefty" side. Hit mag release with trigger-finger, which is outside the guard doing nothing anyway.

Seems to work fine for AR shooters.

I'm surprised this isn't a common thing. Left-handers learned this trick years before companies started offering ambi mag releases on pistols.
Now that is an EXCELLENT idea! The trigger finger has a lot of down-time, why not make it do some of the work? lol.
I like it!

do You have the least protrusive backstrap on?
I have what it came in the box with on there. It did have 4 others of various sizes. I guess I can fool around with those and see what happens. Thanks. If they can be changed by me, which is a whole other can of worms.....

Remove any backstrap for skinniest grip

I have a Rainier Arms MARS (Magazine Advanced Release System) on my Gen5 19. BUT there was a LONG adjustment period to get where I was not dropping mags from my weapon due to my middle finger riding the ambi side of the release where my undercut on my trigger was. Grip adjustment made and now I have the option to drop with my finger or thumb. (I have ALWAYS used my middle finger on my right hand to drop my Xd mags due to little girl hands)

You guys are really giving me a lot to think about....

There are a TON of options for mag releases, I'd start with something a little cheaper since you are used to using the thumb anyway with your other weapons, but if you find yourself liking the reversed factory release the MARS is a great option. But you can try out 3-4 for the same price. I've also heard good things about this one:

Another great thing about working on mag release techniques.......can do it at home with dryfire ALL DAY LONG. Can't sleep? Grab two or three empty mags and start training. lol

I've got little girl hands, and this takes some getting used to, but maybe it can help. Use support hand to pull the weapon into the thumb on the strong hand.

I'm going to try this later tonight! Thanks. I need every time-saving and movement-saving advantage I can find.

Beauty of kydex: it grinds easily for clearance. I make my OWBs clearanced so I can reload with the gun holstered if I want. If covered is desired it can be gently heated and pushed out.

The world/national champion production ipsc/uspsa shooter flips the gun to drop mags, it is not really an issue.

Flips it how? I'd love to see video if you can direct me to one.
I just want to be able to do it with one hand, and be efficient, and not lose the grip on the gun.

Probably what you're doing, you relax your grip, flip the gun slightly so the thumb reaches, and it kinda falls back where it needs to be as you reaquire a firing grip. I can't recall a video where it's perceivable. Ben Stoeger is who I refer too. I am not saying not to try an extended/larger release, it will probably help some, but shifting one's grip to reload is not uncommon.

It's nice of you to assume the gun falls back into the proper grip for me, but I'm way to new for that to be happening. Everything has to be consciously thought out, though things are getting more natural for me as I go along...lol. I'll look this guy up and see if I can see anything.

Millie, shifting your grip to reload is common if not the dominate method. I have short fingers and have never been able to maintain my firing grip when reloading. So, taking this as a given, it's time to pratice your technique of breaking the firing grip and re-reacquiring it. Since you say you're having a problem with that. The above video method of driving the gun into your thumb is a good one. Practice by standing over your bed (because the mags don't drop as far and you don't have to bend over to pick them up) with your gun and empty magazines and reload and sight and reload and sight over and over again. If it gets confusing, slow down and go through each step deliberately. Speed will come.

Also, be careful you don't get too "gamey" unless this is your intent. Personally, I never shot IDPA thinking I was going to be the fastest out there. I did it for trigger time and gun manipulating practice for the real world. It's easy to get caught up in the game and start deviating from real self defensive shooting.

Just my .02

I like this. Definitely something new to me.

He did hit on one of my pet-peeves, though. He said "if you train it enough, it will be instinctive". You can't train "instincts". That's what differentiates instincts from learned behavior. There is almost nothing about shooting a gun that is "instinctive".

1:04 = "Leave the damn guns alone." As in don't put anything bigger on the gun.

Bwahahahaha.

Uh, no.

Not for his reasoning, I think his logic is sound and he believes John Browning knew what he was designing. But modifications are half or more of the fun.

@Millie on your Gen 4, reversing the magazine release is a piece of cake. Try this before you spend any money on anything. It just might work for you. If not, it's easy to return it back like it was.

That's an interesting idea, but you're assuming I can actually do this! I'll check the video and see if I can.
Thanks!

I'll try this out today.

As far as the matches go, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be one of those really smooth and fast shooters!

I'd just like to see myself improve. It gives me a challenge, which I seem to need. I'm only interested in my times so that I can see any small improvements as I go along. The "beep" is just a signal for me to start my slow process of learning. Lol.

Also, matches are good practice for me, and it's a huge learning experience to watch the good shooters do their thing! Not to mention the advice I've gotten during a match while watching. This is why I decided to try a match out, and why I'll keep doing them (in cool weather.)

Here's Koenig on reloads. It may help you with shifting your strong hand grip.

Wow, these guys are smooth, and I guess I need to do more stuff while I'm watching my movies on TV...thanks.

That's what I do. Mag release on dominant side, trigger finger deployed. It's just more convenient, speed notwithstanding.

While not having anything to do with reaching the button... this guy is SMOOOTH

He's gotten faster with age. This is probably as fast as a human can reload.

What can you say to that but WOW!

Well, it did seem like a great idea....but now I can't get the slide off the gun, and it's not like I haven't done it before! LoL. Those little things you have to pull down are really tight, and I can't hold them down to slide the slide off....dang!!!
(Not quitting, though, just taking a cursing break.)
