What is a decent scope for ranges out to 300yds with a 22lr? Going to be shooting a ruger 10/22. Will have a 20 moa base. I have a BSA sweet 22 but it runs out of adjustment at 150 yds.

Was looking at the athlon talos 6x24x50 with the BDC reticle.

What i like others do not. But i like the Super Sniper 10x works great to 400yds

I have run an Athlon Helos and a Vortex Diamondback tactical on mine. I like them both. The Helos is a little better scope, but the Diamondback is about $100 cheaper. Both work well out to 400-500 yards. A lot of folks were running Athlon Argos on theirs, and that is a decent, reasonably priced scope also. Personally, I would avoid a pre-ranged, hunting type BDC reticle and would go with a more traditional reticle with a "Christmas Tree" in the lower reticle for holdovers, because at about 300-400 yards, you will often be holding off a good bit for wind.

I had a CZ Precession Varmint 455 with a 24 inch barrel in .22 with a Sightron 10x50x60 on it. Overkill? Yeah, but I was bustin the bullseye at 300 yards with it and had the chance, if not the ability to go farther. Buy the best scope that you can afford and go from there, I’ve never looked back and thought to myself, “ Damn, I wish that I’d bought that True Glow from Walmart instead!” I was taught that the rule of thumb is put as much (or more) into the glass as you did the rifle! I’ve got another CZ 455 with a Boyd’s stock and a 16.5 inch threaded barrel and a Trijicon 4.5x18x50 that does a good job. It’s no 300-400 yarder but shoots really well at 250.

Totally agree here. While you may not ever use some of the higher mags, I absolutely love being able to dial up the mag and get a much better view of my shots, good and bad. It helps make adjustments. Some of my best scores actually came with my Athlon Cronus, which only goes up to 29x, but I love my Sightrons at 50x and the Vortex GE at 60x. I have tried many levels from <$100 scopes up to a S&B $3k scope. While I don't feel like I will ever bother going back up to S&B, I am positive I won't ever use a <$100 scope either. I was always perfectly happy with a 4-16 scope and it was all I ever needed, until I tried something that went to 25x. Then I new what I was missing. I may never own another scope lower that 25x (except for my hunting scopes). You don't have to max them all the time, but having that ability is worth it. It all depends on what you are doing, but I would much rather have the mag and not need it, than not have it and need it.

Thanks guy. The scope will be here tomorrow. But I'm going to put a 20 moa base on the rifle. The 20 moa base will help me by not using so much of the internal adjustment of the scope right?

Also I will be ordering some lapua midas +, RMS rifle match and Fiocchi Exacta rifle super match to try out too. Just to see :)

I will also be getting a Boyd's varmint pro stock. After a hour on the bench the factory stock is hurting my wrist.

Varmint Pro is nice. I do like that style a lot and have used several of them. The 20 MOA base will probably be fine depending on how you zero. I don't know what the adjustment range is on the Talso, but you are looking around 16MOA of adjustment to get to 150yds from a 50yd zero.

With standard velocity ammo (1080 fps) you will use about 4.5 mils adjustment for 150 yards, 13.9 mils for 300 yards. The Athlon Talos BTR 4-14×44 has 20 mils of elevation. A 20 moa base will put you near the bottom of your elevation range and allow you to adjust elevation up as you increase yardage. I am using a 25 moa base with this scope and with 50 yard zero, I have just over 16 mils of elevation available.

FWIW...I used Burris Signature rings on my CZ455. You can use offset ring inserts to adjust the MOA instead of being stuck with 20. Maybe 15 is enough? Maybe 25 is required? Don’t have to keep buying mounts if you just change inserts.

Sounds good. For a 6x24x50 scope do you think the medium or high rings would work? Thanks

I’m horrible at figuring that stuff out. I usually buy 2-3 sizes from Amazon and send back what doesn’t work. :D

For mine, I attached directly to the 11mm dovetail and used high (returned medium). I’m running a 6-18x40 Bushnell.

We would need to know exactly which rings you would be looking at because even Burris has different sizes for medium or high between the different models.

I use this site with good luck.

Buying a couple and returning works too.

The rifle is a savage b22 fv-sr. The scope is a athlon argos 6x24x50. I'm looking at the burris signature zee rings. Burris website says the 30mm med are .81 and the high are .93 in height.

I guess it depends on how tall that rail is and your barrel contour, but using the calculator, I think .93s will be fine if I assume a fairly low rail and not a bull barrel.

There is a chance the .81s would work, but if it was me, I would go with the highs because the calculations don’t support the lower ones. That being said. I usually end up with one higher than I probably needed based on the calculator.

Sounds right. Would it be a good idea to buy the 20 moa rail and the zee rings? This 22lr will be shot out to 300yds.

I think 20 MOA is fine for most anything. That being said, 300yds is a long way for a 22LR! My dope card ends at 250 and needs 37 MOA to get there. I don’t think 20 MOA is enough alone (even with the scope having 60 MOA internal adjustment) but with rings like those Burris rings with the inserts, you might be able to get enough for 300.

Those rings are pretty good, and will be fine for a 22LR.

I also have an Athlon Helos BTR 6-24×50, it also has 18 mils total elevation adjustment, on another .22 with 25 moa base. It has a high height ring and zeroed at 50 yards. It only has about 11 mils elevation adjustment available.

Well with the 20 moa base plus 20 moa in the rings that's 40 moa total. With a 50 yard zero I think I will be good :) thanks guys!!

You can get 40 out of the rings themselves if you want. +20 insert on one end and -20 on the other.

They definitely come with some, but I cannot confirm which ones. BW actually uses them, so I trust his input.

That being said, he didn't actually say the 20s come with them, so good question. I thought they only came with 10s. It has been years since I tried them, but they didn't fit so I didn't keep them.

Do they come with all the inserts or do you buy them? If I can get 40 moa just from the rings than I will just get them :)
They sell the inserts separately. You’d get 0 MOA inserts with it...but can buy 5, 10 and 20.

What I’d suggest is buy the set that has one of each, and then another 20. That would let you try 20, 25, 30 and 40 if you wanted. You can see some options here:

https://www.opticsplanet.com/burris-signature-pos-align-offset-insert-kits-individual-inserts.html

They list the 10, the 20, and then the 5/10/20 variety pack. (Cheaper elsewhere...but that at least showed them all)

@BigWaylon the pic I saw has the inserts with the rings. So I have to order the inserts too?
The rings don’t work without inserts, so some come with the rings. But I think they’re 0 MOA (which is what I tried to say earlier, but must’ve been unsuccessful). To get the offset inserts, you have to buy the other ones.

So you could run a 0/20 combo to get 20, or a 5/20 for 25, 10/20 for 30 or 20/20 for 40. That make sense? FwIW...you could also run a -10/+10 combo to get 20. Each set is good for the advertise MOA (based on distance between rings)...but you can run them oriented one way for positive value and flip them the opposite way for negative value.

@BigWaylon I can only find 1 inch inserts, I will be getting the 30mm rings.

The catalog said the 30mm come with 0 and 10 moa inserts. If I flip the 10 moa over on the back that would be 20 moa right?

Found something similar posted from a couple years ago:

Burris 30mm Sigs come with 2 pr. of +/- 0 and +/- 10 inserts, yielding up to 20 MOA external elevation, but they don't sell optional inserts. The 1" rings just come with 2 sets of +/- 0 inserts and sell kits of +/- 5, 10 and 20 inserts and also sell them in single pairs (5, 10 and 20 MOA.) No 5 or 20's are available for the 30mm rings. To me, that defies explanation.

And 3.6” seems to be the distance needed between rings.

Your +10/-10 would get you 20. And if you had the rings closer together than 3.6”, you’d actually get a little more.
