Help with Para Expert Carry 1911 (please)

So I took a buddy of mine to @Panteao Sportsman's Club to shoot yesterday. After shooting rifles we moved to the pistol bays and he had this happen to his pistol. Looks like the guide rod (?) somehow broke and he doesn't have a clue what to do.

Being a plastic gun guy (Glock, Walther) myself and never owning a 1911 (I know, I know) neither do I so I thought I would post it up and see what my fellow CFF friends could offer up.

The slide will not go back more than an inch so he can't even take it apart. Suggestions on how to proceed? I'm guessing the grips need to come off and then ????

My buddy has a birthday in a few weeks so I am going to fix this on my own for him.

So it looks like just a standard 1911 guide rod is needed? Something like this:

I have not. Just got this from him yesterday after we were done shooting. Will call tomorrow.

Yes Sir! Running better than new according to my buddy who I fixed it for (thanks to your help). Gave it to him late last night just in time for his birthday range trip today.
