The I want a 9mm bolt gun thread got me thinking about this again, and I didn’t want to hijack it.
I originally wanted a short threaded Marlin 45/70 to hunt with 400g+ suppressed sub Sonics. I’m worried about the slower twist not stabilizing a 400-500 cast slug. My next thought was to get a Howa mini action (.556 donor rifle) and have it rebarreled with a 16” tube. I’ve a SiCo Hybrid for the build.
Thoughts?

Why wouldn't the Marlin not stabilize a 400-500gr bullet? My Guide Gun shoots the Remington 405gr JSP very well.

Nobody has to Sell me on a new toy. Why not go the inexpensive route first??? NEF in 45-70. OR go All the way..NEF in 500 S&W.

How short? I posted a link sometime previously, but here’s a 12.5” 45-70 build including a Hybrid:

Michael has more info on 45-70 than anybody. Ask JD Jones. He can sort you out on anything 45-70.

That's a great piece, and a lot more than I want to spend to see if I'd like one.
I was thinking 16", that'd let the hot 458's get up to speed as well, and only 1 stamp.
But if his 12.5” 45-70 runs fine...you could build a 16” one instead of going 458. :D

@thrillhill has a beauty of a 16.5" NEF .45-70. Feels & looks shorter & handier than you'd expect, thanks to the short action length.

The thought of launching great big subsonic bullets through a can just makes me smile.

This would be the easy way to play. Shorten to 16 inches, thread and thread protector, and you already have a Hybrid ready to go. Easy. The twist rate in common guns are not an issue with 400-450 for sure. At subsonic there really is not a big reason to go up in weight more than 400 anyway. Cast is ok, especially at subsonic. Little dirty, and since you are relying on Caliber instead of Bullet Tech for Terminal Performance, I would go with the various low cost jacketed bullets, with the 405 Remington heading the top of the list on this. I just measured up one of my Marlins here, short is around 14.5 inches without having to deal with the magazine tube. 1.5 inches is always nice, but I don't know that it is worth the extra issues and turmoil. Shorter than that, then it starts to get expensive.

For light loads in 45/70 I have always used IMR 4198. 28/IMR 4198 normally gives anything 1200-1300 fps with most 300-400 gr bullets. You could easy drop that to 23-25/IMR 4198 and get into SubSonic range with a variety of different bullets. Looking back on some old data, I had a load in one rifle that was a 300 Hornady with 25/IMR 4198 at 1088 fps. Getting close...........

Large caliber SubSonic always makes good sense. Unless of course you are just playing. If you are looking for Terminal Performance at SubSonic, then you got to consider Caliber doing your work for you.
