Robot Baseball Umpires

Here's the latest-

The independent Atlantic League became the first American professional baseball league to let a computer call balls and strikes Wednesday night at its All-Star Game. Plate umpire Brian deBrauwere wore an earpiece connected to an iPhone in his pocket and relayed the call upon receiving it from a TrackMan computer system that uses Doppler radar.

He crouched in his normal position behind the catcher and signaled balls and strikes.

"Until we can trust this system 100 percent, I still have to go back there with the intention of getting a pitch correct because if the system fails, it doesn't pick a pitch up or if it registers a pitch that's a foot-and-a-half off the plate as a strike, I have to be prepared to correct that," deBrauwere said before the game.

It didn't appear deBrauwere had any delay receiving the calls at first but players noticed a big difference.

"One time I already had caught the ball back from the catcher and he signaled strike," said pitcher Daryl Thompson, who didn't realize the technology was being used until after he disagreed with a call.

Infielder L.J. Mazzilli said a few times hitters who struck out lingered an extra second or so in the batter's box waiting on a called third strike.

QUIT FARKING WITH BASEBALL!!!!!!!!!!

I concede that it can be boring to the unindoctrined. Guess what? YOU DONT HAVE TO GO TO THE GAMES!!! Maybe North Koreans are held at gunpoint to watch their national team play, but we here in America can go do something else other than site in on a 100+ year old sacred sport and think of ways to change it.

First timers, then instant replays, now this shit?!

As I teach the little kids that I coach: bad calls are as much a part of the game as home runs, grass, and dugouts. If you can’t deal with them, you don’t belong playing the game.

And then there's this-

Baseball trivia buffs better take note because the answer to “how many ways can a batter reach first base?” might be changing. Major League Baseball will allow hitters in the Atlantic League to steal first base in the second half of the Atlantic League season, according to the Washington Post.

Just to be clear, this change is not coming to MLB during the second half. It’s coming to only the Atlantic League.

That is significant as MLB is connected to the Atlantic League. The two leagues partnered together in February. For MLB, the partnership is all about testing radical ideas to see how they impact baseball. If any of those ideas stick, MLB could consider adopting them in the future.

In the second half of the season, the league will allow batters to steal first base: Any pitch on any count not caught in flight will be considered a live ball, and a batter may run to first base, similar to a dropped third strike.

On any ball dropped by the catcher, a runner can attempt to steal first base.

next thing they’ll back the pitcher up another 10’

Having this for an umpire would certainly chill the game, or perhaps make things exciting.

As is having an umpire that is obviously intoxicated to where you can smell the whiskey and his son is on the opposing team. Ask me how I know.

Good teaching, but a ball is a ball and a strike is a strike. An out is an out, etc. Since the implementation of reviews in baseball, many, many plays have been overturned. Try calling first base sometime as major league speeds.

Anybody remember this bad call? It ruined a perfect game.

Part of the game. We're human. There is no life or death about it. I'm not gonna hear explanations of money being at stake, careers, etc. It's a game and all of that is far secondary. In fact, i'd call those things "leaches" on the game.

Here's the human side to it:

And here's a major strike against replay:

So even computers and wizardry can't make the game "perfect." Leave it the hell alone.

AAA ball has been using a pitch clock, and I think it has helped the pace of the game a lot.

You might as well call Ronald Reagan a communist! A bald eagle a parakeet. Mt. Rushmore a sandcastle.

You're dead to me! :D

In all seriousness...my real beef with the pitch clock is like adding new gun laws after a shooting. There are already laws in place to prevent it in the first place! In baseball, if a pitcher is taking too long, it's only hurting his team. It's rocking them back on their heels and I gaur-un-damn-tee you his pitching coach is going to give him hell over taking too long. Part of a pitcher's job is to control the pace of the game purposefully and strategically. That means quick-pitching a guy sometimes, making a runner wait forever other times, making a batter who's anxious wait until he calls time, etc.

We might as well make the center fielder wear scuba gear while playing too...because, why not? It makes as much sense as shot timers, robot umps, and playback cameras!

By the way...if a live-action baseball game is too boring for anyone, watch this guy's recaps and highlights. Pretty entertaining (level 1 caution: language):

And since he references Kent Murphy, you should go ahead and check him out too (again, mild warning for language):

But, I’m against the DH! :p

Me too. I got shelved from the plate as a pitcher in high school. They'd let us take BP maybe once a week as the "Bomb Squad." In all fairness, I sucked at hitting!

If we could get rid of Joe Buck and Tim Kurkjian, I'd be happy.
Robotize the announcers. Let the people vote on classic commentator voice boxes before the game. There...that's the pacifier to throw the crybabies!
