Precision Rifle Picture Thread !!!!!

Which squad were you in? I was the glass RO for squad 3 and on the first squad one day 2

I (John) was the stage RO with George on Stage 8 (Steps) on Saturday and on Stage 6 (1000 yard platform) with George and Bob on Sunday. We split duties on Saturday, but on Sunday I gave the stage briefing, Bob ran the shooters and George, well Georged...

Are the "gold" optics Athlon Cronus?

Most of them were Vortex Razors, but there may have been a Cronus or two out there this weekend.

I currently have a Vortex 6-24x50HST that I bought second hand at a bargain (almost 2 years ago)... it has been good to me on my first "long range" rifle that keeps evolving. After looking through some really nice optics at distance (900yds+) my HST is simply not cutting it. It's just hazy, nowhere near the clarity. Once I'm ready to move up, what would you recommend? I own several other Vortex products and would love to stay in the family so to speak unless there is a much better bang for buck contender in the space. This will stay mounted on a 20" .308 so maximum distance shooting would be ~1k yards.

From my own experience, I have also had good luck with the Vortex lines and I really like the EBR-2C reticle, so I just upgraded my match rifle from a FFP Viper PST to a Razor HD and that has caused a cascade effect on my other rifles/optics. I just recently pulled an Athlon Helos off of my rimfire match rifle and replaced it with a Vortex Diamondback Tactical EBR-2C to make my match/trainer reticles homogenous. The old FFP Viper PST is going onto my wife's RPR (replacing her old SFP Viper PST) and the Helos is going onto one of the uppers (6.5 Grendel or 5.56 Heavy SS) on my "precision" AR lower. The old SFP Viper PST will go on the other upper. I would rate the Helos as equal optical quality to the PST's at 2/3 the price, but with a few less features.

As for a recommendation, that is hard because it really all depends on your budget and your reticle preference. I can say that I recommend buying the best glass you can justify and afford (subject to it having a reticle that you like), because when it comes to optical quality on scopes, you really do get what you pay for. And if you "settle" for something that is not what you really like/want, you will not be happy in the long run. I will say that after watching what the match winners and podium riders are shooting, and looking through a lot of glass when I get the opportunity, the Vortex Razor AMG line is pretty sweet for the money as are the Kahles tactical scopes. Mid-level Night Forces (and up) are also very, very good. The basic Night Forces, the Gen 2 Vipers and the higher line Athlons are also decent in the lower price range (comparatively). But keep in mind that no matter how good the glass, you are still going to have some mirage issues in this climate - especially at higher magnifications. Truth be told, even at 1000 yards, I very seldom have my magnification over 14X-16X anymore. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze most of the time.

Yeah, I just noticed your picture in the avatar. I really wanted to shoot the Guardian at FLD this year, but just have not had the time to put in the practice this year. So, I decided to just RO it instead. I need to get off my ass and start doing more load development and putting more lead downrange. I am rusty as hell.

You know where I am if you need anything. I have guys come over a lot to do load development at my house. Draw up a load and walk out of the shop and shoot a 100 yard group.

Thanks! And congrats on the podium finish at Pigg River!

I must have channeled him because I missed a bronze medal at the CMP Eastern Games at Camp Butner by 1 damn point.
I just took sniper school there not to long ago. Once my new build is done I'm going to build an f tr rifle out of one of my prs rigs. Looks like I could learn a lot from it.

My new "long range" rifle. Ruger American predator 6.5 creedmoor, 20 moa scope base, magpul stock, magpul cheek riser, no name muzzle brake, trigger is set to 2lbs. The scope that is on it atm is just a cheap tasco I had laying around. It will have a athlon argos 6x24x50 when it comes back from warranty work and it will sit in vortex rings. I also have a threaded bolt handle coming. Hope to go this Saturday to shoot her :) the reviews on the rifle are great and I hope she shoots good. Also have to get her a bipod...

The plan is to shoot the factory barrel till it gives out and then replace it with a heavy barrel from a good aftermarket company ( there are few now making barrels).

Off to cerakote tomorrow final stage of build

I've been considering the Ruger Predator & Vortex scope combo in .308. I can get it for $583 locally. Get the Magpul stock for it (or maybe a nice laminate from Boyds?) & thinking I'd have a pretty decent rifle for not crazy money. Not a lot of opportunities to shoot truly long distance, but I'd like to learn & have the capability w/o breaking the bank.

ETA- I would definitely want to upgrade the glass once my skills improved & slush fund recovered.

A buddy has 2 of the Ranch models in .300BLK & 7.62x39 & loves them, but I've got those chamberings covered with other platforms. My 6.8 shoots MOA to at least 300 yds & brings a goodly bit of heat, but I don't have a legit, .30 cal hammer.

Any reason not to have it cut down to 16"? It will likely end up wearing a can & I'd like to keep it as compact as possible.

Sig Sauer just released a rifle in Kuiu camo pattern that looks similar to the camo you did.

Tinkering around this morning, and next thing you know, voila lol.
Got the amount of padding needed in the cheek rest figured out and mounted/timed a Griffin two port taper mount muzzle brake for my Optimus to ride on. I had to slide the scope back a couple notches on the rail so my cheek is not on the forward edge of the riser when I get on it.
I'm planning a range trip tomorrow to rezero everything and figure out poi shift with the supressor.
It aint much, but Im just starting in this game lol. I've only shot it out to 200 yds, and for a factory rifle (Savage 110 6.5 CM) with factory ammo (Hornady 140 gr ELD Match), budget scope (PA 4-14x44 Mil Dot reticle), and user limitations (complete noob), I'm happy so far. It's holding steady at 1 moa for me. I have several other brands/weights of ammo to try out going forward.
Relatively inexpensive setup (Optimus doesn't count, already had it lol) that is giving me decent results while I figure out if I want to chase this particular dragon or not
