Some pics of a new project. So far.... Removed all, rotten bed wood, somone had screwed a metal sheet over the top. Removed all the cab interior, getting ready to redo that next. Did a suspension lower, 3" in front, 4 in rear. Shocks/springs. Put new bushings in trackbar in rear. Getting ready to put in new bed wood when I find what I want.

Put exhaust on it. Flowmasters. Makes it sound nice. Tightened up the steering box which helps a ton. Need to redo the Pittman arm and all the ball joints. I saw our own @Sharps40 apparently dabbles in these old trucks as well as he had a great tutorial on one of the other forums.

Stuck a few slabs of pine in the bed to be able to mount it back on the truck. That thing was a pain to mow around.

It has a nice stance to it. The spring kit didn't make it too low, but it handles nicely. Currently it smokes, I'm afraid it might need some rings or something. Gotta get a mechanic to look it over... Maybe carb adjustments need to be done too. Picked up a few of the centers for the front wheels on ebay. These wheels came off a 4wd, so I had open centers for the 4x4 hubs.

Just put a crate motor in it. It will cost more than the new engine to rebuild the old one and you will get a warranty plus way more power.
I honestly thought about that. Im going to contact Pilot Engines over here near Mt Airy, see what they have going on over there. I know they install and the whole shebang.

I just put a 383 chevy crate motor in a customers 56 that clocked in at 458hp and 483ftlbs of torque. He got the motor from Summit $4k complete from oil pan to carb and distributor already dyno run and tuned. All I had to do was bolt it up put plug wires, plugs and fluids in it. It was dvertised as less power than that but the reviews said it made more than the claimed 420 460 power marks, man did it ever. You can get much cheaper engines but I am not a fan of engine replacement shops stuff. By from Summit or Jegs and have them install it if you want.

It currently wears that 327….so I will have to go with a 327-350 SBC, right? Damn, 458 hp. yes, please.

Thats the great thing about small block chevys you can bolt up anything from a 4.3lv6 or a 262v8 all the way to a punched out 400 and all of your other parts will bolt right up. A 350 based varient would be your cheapest option. The engine replacement center will just give you a low power economy boring motor but you can buy what ever you desire from Summit or Jegs for proably the same money or less and get a better warranty and can look at reviews before pulling the trigger. Remenber with a truck you want a motor that makes lots of torque not high rpm horse power so pick a engine that most of the peak power is made from idle to about 5000rpm unless you have a manual trans to use more high end.

I am not a car guy, but that is some sexy wood. Gonna be nice.
I was plaining that stuff, and said to the guy who is helping me with it that I probably need to be beaten making it a truck bed instead of a beautiful kitchen table. He just looked at me poker faced. :)

So, I looked through Summit and Jegs…. send me an example of a 350 variant that will be turn key. Under $19K. LOLOL. $4K or less. Like your buddy bought.

327 is a gen 1 engine and uses gen 1,2 trans and accessories....and can adapt to some gen 3, 4 parts and trans.

Gen 3 engines are ls like inside and gen 1,2 like outside, are computer controlled and can be not computer controlled. They use 4l60e and up trans and can be adapted backwards.

Gen 4 is the ls. A bird of it's own. Full computer controlled. adaptable to old and new accessories and different enough to be a pain in the ass.

Overall...it aint cheap and its rarely a direct bolt up or in
