Shelving was 19 1/2” from the back wall of the safe to the front edge. With the current rack, all my long guns were stacked criss-crossed. Any rifle with a scope or RDS was a double pain in the ass. If I wanted something outta the back, I pretty much had to remove everything to get to it.

I shortened all the shelves to a depth of 12 1/2”, added a shelf to the top and recut the shelf thst holds the long guns. Now, everything is stored upright instead of slanted and I can access most everything without beating and banging them around.
The door shelf/recess:
The panel on the door is 1/4” backed by 1/2 gypsum board. I built the lower shelf with 3/4 plywood. It is braced with a section of 2x2 on the bottom that runs the entire length of the shelf. I used a 3/4” plywood strip on the backside of the panel, ran decking screws through that and into the shelf/brace.

Once I got the shelf installed, I did a test fit of the scoped long guns to get and idea of where the recess needed to be. Once I got my measurements, I cut the gypsum backing, removed the section of carpet from the front and used a circular saw set at 1/2” depth to cut the plywood. The recess from the edge of the interior panel to the door is 3 1/2”. I built a box for the recess from 1/2” plywood and covered the sides/back with sheetrock.

For the barrel braces, I used 2x2. I cut the hole with a forstner bit, then cut the section off the 6’ piece of 2x2. The brace attaches to the interior door panel with industrial velcro and it’s rock solid.

Even though the rifles seem pretty steady, I will probably affix some sorta retention device to the brace to prevent the barrel(s) from falling forward.
I covered everything with indoor/outdoor carpet using spray adhesive.
