America is sitting on a mountain of uneaten bacon.

And somehow bacon is like $5 a pound... Is De Beers in the bacon business now???
That is exactly the thought going through my head.... And I'll just bet the farmers aren't seeing much of that premium.

If there is such an excess why is the stuff so expensive. At work I pay $47 bucks for 15 pounds of it.

Guys...guys...like I mentioned, this isn't normal bacon. This is weaponized bacon against the enemies of the west! Of course its more expensive! Its actually LEO/MIL Only, I seent it marked on the packages!

essentially, the futures market set the price of pork bellies in the past. that future is now, and we get past prices.
in accounting, it's First In, First Out. also, hog production hit a high mark
anticipating the China market without tariffs.

Where is this magic mountain you speak of? Some here would like to make a pilgrimage there I bet.

More than 40 million pounds (18,000 metric tons) of pork bellies, the cut used for bacon making, were sitting in refrigerated warehouses as of Sept. 30, according to U.S. government data released Tuesday. That’s the most for the month since 1971.

Because of swine flu, producers take the product to market earlier, rather than have to destroy the at risk animals if they later contract the disease.

This is a normal pattern in commodity markets. A threat actually INCREASES the stores on the front end, as producers rush to get them into approved markets before things get scary. Corn blight did the same thing a few decades back.

supply v demand, those prices need to drop some if they got that much extra sitting around

I've been making my own bacon this year. All you have to do is buy fresh pork belly, cure it for a week, and then throw it on the smoker for ~90 minutes.

After that, just slice it and freeze it. Take out a pound and fry it up when you're ready. It's super easy and super amazing gosh darn super fantastic delicious. Far, far better than anything you'll get in the store.

If you're intrigued, google it and then do it and then thank me later. :)

With all the wild hogs in Texas why is bacon not almost free?

Most wild hogs are not nearly fat enough to have a fat enough belly for good bacon. I've came across a few in south Georgia who looked like they never left the peanut fields, but i'd say less than 5% of all of the wild hogs we've killed were fat at all.

Ahhhhhh .....

I did my part today by buying a 15lb box of bacon from the local restaurant supply
