Seriously, unfathomably confused. Its scary, given game wardens have the power to arrest, yet the regulations are difficult to find, and seemingly contradict at various intersections of site content.

My question are:

1) can coyote legally be hunted on gameland (or other state property?) w/ a firearm AT NIGHT?

2) what is the penalty for being wrong (fine/ticket, crime/arrest, etc)?

3a) I have both a sportsman license and also just filled out form for coyote permit. what does that do for me at Jordan Lake Gamelands (or other gamelans NOT in the 5 counties where rules are more strict)?

3b) do I need depredation permit to hunt coyote at night? but then that says only trapping...err

4) any other insights from the community welcomed!

Seriously, its no wonder the practice of hunting is on huge decline in the US. If your not born into hunting family, starting out as a first gen millennial hunter is a minefield of potential problems that could ultimately impact our careers, licenses, etc.....shame.

various contradictory nonsense from official NCWR attached.

Thanks all

Looks like the part you highlighted underneath permit description allows you to hunt coyote at night on public lands at night with that specific permit.

A lot of the contradictory stuff you highlighted seems like it is for different permits or counties, but would need all the info to be 100%.

Edit: this is the only part that you need since you are in "all other counties." Specifically the last sentence since you want to hunt at night on public lands.

In all other counties of North Carolina, coyotes may be taken on private lands anytime day or night; and on public lands without a permit from the hours of one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset, and with a permit from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise.

Hell, I might cut you loose out back after deer season. I’m a couple miles down stream of Jordan lake.

Please do that! I am 8 mi. east of the lake and have been hearing the coyote more and more lately. It appears the are moving away from the lake and closer to humans. I don't have small children or pets but, hearing that yipping so close to me is uncomfortable.

My son just got a pack of yotes killing an 8pt buck on his game cam in Ral.

Why wait till after deer season? I am a terrible deer hunter with all my tags still in the pocket. I'd steal a whole lot of nothin' on the buck front :)

The only place I have them on the game cam is where I hunt.
They go into heat during February& March. See if you can find someone that has an indoor dog that’s not fixed. Save the doggie diapers as bait.

Doggie Diapers???? There is really such a thing? Excuse my ignorance but I'm old and live in the sticks. Guess I need to stay where I am.
I’ve Rotties that live in the house. We use pull-ups and cut a hole for the tail. Then cut out the nasty part and freeze them in Ziploc bags.

Little bambi and such, ok, it happens,
but Dang !
an 8 pointer ?
You would think this guy could take care on himself...

OP, sorry for derailing your thread
He’s barely bigger than Bambi, but I still have a hard time believing a pack would attack a healthy adult buck. Desperate times and scarce food I guess.

I constantly hear three or four packs yipping and howling at each other in the woods surrounding my house, a couple thousand acres easily. There are some houses here and there spread about that land, but it’s mostly woods and a few ag fields. They are definitely growing in numbers over the past 8 years since we built our house here in Johnston county.

My .02, hunting at night on Gamelands outside those 5 counties at night requires a permit. Hunting at night on private land outside those 5 counties does not. (first 2 highlights)
Third highlight is no hunting at night period in those 5 counties. Those are the counties they released red wolves in and they were getting killed at night.
Depredation permits are generally issued in odd situations not covered by the general hunting rules. Like out of season (not applicable for yotes) Or possible because they are being paid for a service. Maybe even based on land you can't normally hunt. Their biggest use it to get rid of nuisance animals outside of the normal season. The no night hunting is a head scratcher for me though.

I'd still call or email NCWRC. They are pretty responsive. But I would have a specific question including where you want to hunt for a better answer.

Just got off phone with the 888 number. This person does not think the Coyote permit covers night on gamelands.

There is another link for 'permitted hunts' that lists specific gamelands where permits are issued for night hunts. I'm inclined to think this adds up (albeit not intuitive AT ALL). That being said, might call local number and see what interpretation is by those who actually patrol the area. Errrr. I just want to justify new toys and take down some predators after work and kid hours.

This thread highlights the confusion being built into the NC regs. It seems that all they do is pass more crap that is sometimes contradictory to the crap they passed last year or the year before that.
I have called Raleigh and found that there isn't anyone there that can answer a simple question because THEIR confused as well!! They want to pass you to the "local" officer that patrols that area and see what BS he comes up with and what's to say his interpretation is going to be the same next Thursday when you're hunting as it was today??
IMHO, they need to take a year off from any additional changes until they can re-interpret and post logical, easy to understand regulations. What we have now reminds me of the old saying, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull shit".....

Unless you're a coon hunter, you probably don't want to be caught on gamelands at night with lights and a gun..........just going by what I know and have experienced. On private land? I kill whatever is in season and as far as I know, coyotes are open season 24/7 outside of the red wolf restoration scam area. Same with hogs.

Those permits you listed are for that specific gameland ONLY, and only what is listed on the permit. This is one of the reasons I gave up trying to hunt NC "permit hunts" on gameland, the utter confusion involved besides the harassment of the local WRC interogating my then-11 year old even after all our licenses were checked.

You are confusing a Permitted hunt with a Hunt Permit. Coyotes are a non-game animal, similar to crows and hogs. Honestly WRC doesn't have much business regulating invasive species anyhow.

I do know Jordan Lake has it's own rules and regs since it's a Army Corp of Engineers property.

Looking back on that, and noting that it's absurdly confusing and obviously written by a lawyer, they are probably right. Even though a laymen probably takes it as I did. That type of ridiculous run on sentence is why law gets so complicated to read.
You might get a better answer via email. They will forward your email to the appropriate person, then you can print that out if you wanted to. But I would just send them that one specific question and the relevant wording in the book. Calling limits the amount of searching they can do for someone that knows the answer.

I would also recommend going to one of the upcoming meetings and voicing your concern. It's actually a pretty good process if you have the time to go to the public hearings. It took us about 2 years but I helped push changing the carry laws on gamelands a number of years ago via the public hearing process.

agreed, good call.

I don’t think the website stuff was written by lawyer, I think what was originally written by a lawyer was then butchered by some media and marketing intern whose job it was to prep content for website. Add in no Editorial technical QC and you have what we are looking at in this thread. Oi.

will check out the hearing schedule. Thanks for your public service in that front. Good to know I won’t be arrested for protecting myself Because on the carry front, I don’t even look at those laws. I always carry. Period. Especially in middle of the woods.

Worst case scenario, if I was “caught” carrying in woods when not supposed to, I’d just discharge my firearm. “Pretty sure I saw a squirrel”. Downgrade that bad boy from some type of possession to poaching tree rats or something. Lol. In all seriousness though, I laugh at those laws. The stupidity is remarkable. They want me to leave Gun in car so it can get stolen and used in crime than to maintain proper chain of custody on my person in an effing forest? I have the highest respect for our men and women in blue, but if any tried to ruin my life over that instead of telling me to “scram”, the transcript of my incident will at least be good material for the comedy thread on here.

will let you know if I hear any different from other folks. I will say the guy on phone was not confident at all and was essentially trying to figure it out with me, so possible that a local interpretation will be more favorable.
