PSA - Wake Co. Range to close to public 1/15/20

Being that I will unemployed, I guess I will have more time to shoot. Oh wait, I have nowhere to shoot anymore.

Howdy neighbor. I can take guests to the club in Durham. It’s a bit of a drive, but we can carpool and make a nice 1/2 day of it. :D

I could certainly use more range time and a qualified eye to spot all my errors in technique. :(

This is speculation and observations from a former Wake Co political office holder and basically her thoughts without any real knowledge of current budget or direct knowledge.

The Wake Co Sheriff’s budget has numerous red areas and the Range is one that has always been a sore subject and to what degree depends on who was looking at it. She didn’t give specific numbers but many politicians felt the Range was a money pit and rode Harrison on how much it cost the county each year when he would. Now Baker is in office and his budget jumped like 5.5% the first year and the projected next one could be as much as 10%. With these jumps Baker is also being hit with questions of just how well he’s managing the department budget and the practices behind it.

She says she thinks it’s a red line that while on the surface might be cut if you look quick but that it could likely come back on him in an increased cost with department personnel having to operate and maintain the facility ... maybe requiring new personnel and costs associated rather than contractor.

If Baker is behind this or even a major player it’s likely going to cost his department more in total yearly than save anything ...

I lived in Wake County when it was built. I remember an uproar back then when the Sheriff's Department said the range was going to be LE only. It took some hashing out to get the "compromise" where the lowly people got to sometimes use the range our money paid for.

Come up to High Point. I’ll supply the range and the ammo. ;)

perhaps private ranges should consider banning all LEO from their facilities until Wake rescinds the ban on civilians. ya know, peer pressure?

People really need to stop hating on Police in general and start pointing the blame where it belongs.... Liberal Police Chiefs and in this case a Liberal POS sheriff.

If the range was open to the public each evening and weekends, it would be a profit center.
I liked it there but jointed Frontiline Defense instead, twice the time to drive but worth the trip.

No where did I indicate hate all police. Got it? I put forth a plan of action and having helped get the wake range open to civilians - by doing just what I said not allowing Leo on our range until they saw the light-done. We have many options to use. This is one.

The range was open to the public evenings (after LE training) and weekends. Monday and Wednesday evenings were reserved for leagues.

You're not hurting anyone with that besides individual Police Officers who are overwhelmingly Pro 2A and are shooters and collectors themselves. Liberal Chiefs and Sheriffs don't give two Sh@#s about your private ranges and the ability of their Officers to use them on their time off.

If you take the orders of a POS against the people you swear an oath to protect, you're a POS too.

You are very correct. In fact, I suspect that if people put as much energy into hating on police in general into placing the blame where it belongs as you suggest, the situation would likely change for the better. Our member, @Average Joe once made a statement that I thought was very insightful, that (my paraphrasing and interpreting) most people who "hate cops" really hate or are angry at or about what govt. has become and their anger is misdirected at what they see as the face of that govt.

The odd thing that I've come to realize is that there is a night and day difference between "police" as an institution and the average cop. It is just about an enigma worthy difference.

Ladies and germs, I’d submit this is a beef for our Wake County taxpayers to take up with their local municipal authorities, be it a POS sheriff, county council, or whatever.

But it doesn’t need to turn into a cop versus constituents slug fest.

Sheriff's Department run and budgeted operation, Its a nice facility and I actually qualify and run a combat range there once a year for work. I was always impressed that they had it open to the public and had matches there. The only point that I was trying to convey is that the New Sheriff is the one that closed the place to the public and that is where the blame should be.

Some of my favorite patrons are active LEO. That said, I did PO a FBI agent when I "politely" asked him to remove the mag from his gun. Range rules, no loaded guns except on the firing line.

LOL... I was talking about Police. I Don't know a single "Cop" that considers people from that Agency as competent out in the "Wild" :)

I'll remember that when you complain about your boss asking you to do something shitty that isn't immoral or illegal

I didn't swear an oath to protect anyone. I have no special powers or authority. I can't commit homicide and have a court hand wave it away, or confiscate property without charges or any of the other special powers law enforcement have.

And if given immoral orders, I'd quit. I've quit over principles before. But I'm not a cop.

If you volunteer to be the overseers of the tax farm and the mailed fist of corrupt politicians and moneyed interests, don't expect those of us being sheared to love you for it or feel sorry for you when you aren't popular.

I must agree. My favorite patrons are Apex and Durham PD.

Didn’t Wake elect a guy who ran on being a Democrat and skin color, much like Guilford?

Yeah, seriously. This isn't specific to this particular issue but the cops aren't our friends these days they're our keepers.

Feel free not to agree with me, I don't have blackshirts with badges to enforce my opinions. But don't try to pretend that law enforcement isn't way more about enforcement than law.

I don't like to characterize skin color when it comes to Politics as I believe that is a cop-out. He and others exploited the liberal push against Trump winning in 2016, whether they believed in those policies or not. In the end it is always about Power.

I changed the MEME because I didn't think it was as funny as the second one. That said, I'm a Cop and I at least used to be your friend. Don't believe the hype and be so angry.

"marksmanship and hunting are increasingly popular in wake county"

There is no where to even hunt in Wake county
My son has found MULTIPLE great places to hunt in Wake. Study g00gle earth, go to the county website that shows ownership, knock on doors, ask and offer to be helpful.
He’s taking 8pt+ bucks on a regular basis. Had 6 in the first month of bow season.
Another winner, take a boat to Kerr lake for some great places as well.

You're a good dude mate, but when I see a badge these days I see a threat to my life and liberty, not a lot else. And it wasn't always this way, some of my favorite customers at the gun store were cops, but things have changed.

Your anger is misplaced my friend. Though you aren't alone in that thought, the media has been relentless in directing anger toward individual Police/Deputies when the anger should be directed towards Police and Sheriff administrations. Some of us, actually most of us line Officers and Detectives are out there every day trying to do the right thing and make a positive difference in our community, that in spite of our Administrations and policy.

Pay attention. THE POLICE trained and used our private range on the clock. It's called training. Hopefully you can understand this. Now let’s laugh

I only hunt rifle, its really hard to find ANY place I feel safe shooting a rifle in.

Nope. Just a shooter in one of the leagues. Word on street is that it will be posted in near future on WC website

Merry Christmas from your Sheriff and County Commissioner’s. Remember them in November

I have little hope Baker will get voted out. Too many new blue voters in Wake. I have a couple buddies with Raleigh PD and they told me he has made the whole jail process horrible, as well has spend wayyyyy to much money and just fire people randomly for political opinions, (he can do the last one no matter what, he is the Sheriff).

Never fear. Even stupid people hate stupid people (meaning blue voters in Wake county, and our high sheriff)

Hopefully he’ll get voted out.

There is a slight chance he will be audited for some budgetary decisions. He has added approximately 5.5% to his first year budget and the second year budget could see approximately 10% jump ... and some people want to know where it’s going.
