I didn't find this topic via search.
Got to shoot with a timer last weekend, now I 'need' one. They seem like '80's technology and bulky plastic.
I do like the Pie's larger display (old man eyes).
What's your experience?

I see the PACT used more than anything...….. It's like 80's electronics... it takes a little bit to figure it out.
The Competition Electronics is a little simpler to use., but not quite as loud as the PACT.
I don't have any problems seeing either display.
I have no idea about the Pie.

I've seen a number of Pacts that kill batteries in storage.

My PPII seems pretty solid, though the off function screws up sometimes and doesn't work, it auto shuts down and batteries still last close to a year with like 250-300 days of 15min to 2 hour use.

I have no idea which is louder, never needed higher than level 3 on mine.

If I didn't have one I'd look hard at AMG labs.

I have the original pocket pro and it does everything I need it to do. I dropped it over the Christmas holiday and broke the battery compartment. I called them and for $2.70 2 new ones were shipped to me. They are all pretty much the same IMHO. IIRC correctly the original Pocket Pro was the cheapest.

@Pink_Vapor
Just curious if you had made a purchase yet and which one you chose?
Alex of AMG is a sponsor of Steve Andersons podcast and he just interviewed him last Friday the 13th.
Interesting fellow, he engineered and builds them all himself by hand.

As an aside, I just recently sent my PP2 back to CE for repair. They did repair it at no cost to me after 2 years of abuse, but if they hadn't stood behind their product I was planning on getting one from Alex.

I’ll have to check that podcast out. The AMG looks great, and it supposedly will register dry fire. Podcast link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/alex-from-amg-lab-com/id578816989?i=1000468325616
Two concerns; I’d read the firmware isn’t updatable, and since they’re new, will they be around in a year+ in case of needed repairs?
I got the PPII and I like it, it’s simple to use, loud, has a clear large well lit display for my old eyes. It’s bulky and doesn’t pick up dry fire.

Another vote for the Pocket Pro II, but just a heads up, the cool kids have the gray one, the blue ones are for n00bs :D

Had a discussion at lunch yesterday with @Alabamacoastie @noway2 @Average Joe @slow is slow and see that I never followed up on this. The podcast is informative, I got the AMG. I like the size a lot better, I can now pick something off the ground without removing a bulky timer off mt belt. It does pick up striker dry fire (Hellcat) most of the time when I turn up the sensitivity, and set it on a counter/tabletop next to me. It also picks up reholstering in Kydex.

I've only owned the PP2, though used lots of diff ones. I like the PP2 because no matter who I'm with everyone can operate it.

Been going strong for many years now, though it's never been dropped and is kept in a plastic cooler in hot summer.

I'd get it from Brownells even if pricier for their guarantee. Though for my 2 I own, I've never had a problem with either of them.

Key point is to not drop any electronic device IMO.

People drop things and get mad that they stop working... ugh.

I own a range,, we shoot USPSA,,, and we use the Pocket Pro models.
Why?
Ease of use by everyone.
Priced fairly.
Time proven track record of dependability.
After having used many others,, they are always the "go to" version of timers most prefer.

I have an original pocket pro, not the 2.

Are there any timers that reliably pick up suppressed fire if held near the barrel Or receiver? I always have to have someone use a stopwatch when I‘m doing timed runs with my MP5SD.

AMG because the super cool kids like Kenau and Halle use them. ;)

(Actually, that might be a CED 7000)

I have pocket pro II, because, like others, standardization. But, I would like to try an AMG.

My AMG has sensitivity settings.
Maybe I can come by next weekend with it.

AMG is backordered for 8 weeks. Did you get yours direct?

That would be great! I'm doing some volunteer work at the RR museum on Saturday, but should be free later in the afternoon.

My Pocket Pro crapped the bed yesterday at the range. One of the leads to the 9 Volt connector broke off. I called them and they said I could send it in and for $30 including shipping they would fix it or if I was good at soldering I could fix it myself. So I got out the soldering iron and bought $1.50 shrink sleeve and fixed it myself. Good as new. It is nice when a company supports the product but at the same time will tell you how to fix it yourself.

Does the pocket pro pick up dry fire as well? I see the Amg says it can on some guns. Would be good for training at the house.

I get most of my shooting supplies from LGS or Brownells. For electronics, I go with Brownells for their return policy.

For whatever reason... over 30+ electronic products only had 2 stop working with regular usage. A cooling barrel fan and a laser that had batteries corrode within a month.

Yeah, it costs more, but the peace of mind is worth it for me even if I pay more in the long run.

I run the blue Pocket Pro 2 btw; cuz I'm old and lame. It's the easy button for people knowing it.

Thanks for reviving this thread @falconew . I’ve been thinking about a timer but was between the PACT and Pocket Pro since that’s what I’ve used and seen used a lot. Seems like the AMG is worth looking at, and it’s similarly priced.

Wife and I use the AMG, a lot, and with delight.
Bought a bright orange printed case for it.

This is the only other one that tempts:

Thanks for the feedback and sharing the Kestrel. However, once I saw the $300 price tag, I stopped looking. That’s a little rich considering the other options are roughly half of that.

My pocket pro II does not on striker fired handguns, not sure if I’ve tried it with a hammer fired gun but I can give it a try later and report back.

Anybody use an app on their smartphone? Just wondering...

I have a Pocker Pro II, because it's so standard and common. I use a phone app mostly for par timing while dryfiring indoors. Like to see if my draw to first to trigger press within a 2 second window. The phone app is handy because it's always there in case you don't have a real timer. I've also used it in knife training to demonstrate the Tueller rule.
The main problems with a phone app are loudness and exposure of the phone in a shooting environment.
