What's the Proper Way to Hunt Squirrels?

Rustling leaves ain't annoyin'... but when Squirrels chew yer electric service line, yer plastic gas can, stuff under the hood o' yer truck, all o' yer bird feeders... that kinda stuff is annoyin'.

So, I choot 'em.

Ah, yes: The Mecklenburg Theorem of Squirretical Mathmatics.

It was developed while researching the problem of Squirrel Entropy, exemplified in the question: If a squirrel rustles in the forest, and there's no one around to hear it, is it still annoying?

The Schrodinger Tree-rat Principle postulates that no, as there was never any observer to collapse the quantum tree rat state. However, this is an oversimplified assumption that doesn't properly take into account the macromolecular properties best described using the theory of relativity; in which case the petulance of the tree rat is relative TO the observer and, as such, is most definitely, STILL ANNOYING.

Ya know, it's actually quite dangerous for a hawk to grab a squirrel. Squirrels can do a lot of damage to a hawk's legs. When I've seen 'em do it, they kinda stomp on 'em, and kill them quickly.

They are all over my property. As in, dozens. Apparently they are territorial? My brother-in-law trapped a butt-load on his property, released them a few miles away. He gets them on the periphery, but none in his yard.

Those hawks, all over my property, too. I love them. Beautiful birds.

Best way? Climb in a deer stand and wait. You won't see any deer but bushy tail will practically crawl in your lap. I keep a Ruger long barrel for that. I've shot a few lately just walking with a CZ 455 and Blazer 40 g solids. Cheap and accurate. Light drizzle weather or damp, changing weather with no wind is ideal for walking. Actually a regular rifle scope 3x9x40 is fine for parallax plus bigger screen and bright. My head shot victims tend to get away for some reason so I take the lungs or neck maybe for the challenge. Nothing to eat there anyway. I keep forgetting the easy way to skin them though. Cut their tail almost off, skin down the hind legs a little, step on the hind legs and pull up. I don't like killing them or eating them as much as knocking em out of a tree!

Yes, but did you assume a spherical squirrel?

20ga Wingmaster with a 26" full barrel shooting 1oz#6 pheasant loads. I generally jump a few wood cocks and rabbits while squirell hunting and like the flexability a shotgun offers. 1 oz of plated #6s is also a wonderful woodduck load if one happens to attack (not that I have any personal expereince)

Thirty some years ago I hunted squirrels with a buddy who would drop the dead ones in a game pocket in a vest he wore.
One day we were standing around talking when one of those squirrels "woke up"!
Sammy-Joe suddenly jumped into the wildest dance, stripping off clothes like he was on fire.
He threw the vest on the ground and we all saw it moving.
Sammy hit it with a load of #4 shot while we stood laughing our butts off.
He continued to wear that vest for several years, holes and all.

Those work pretty well but never seen it catch more than one at a time but may just have been our luck. Brother has one but be sure you anchor it down or put something heavy on it. He had a hawk try to carry it off one day. Came home and trap was about 15 yards from where it was set originally with a squirrel with claw marks still in side.

I bought some 110 Connibear traps after watching that one video. I freely admit that I’m weak, but holy crap are they hard to set. Just ordered a setting tool off Amazon.

I imagine trapping is illegal here. Everything else is. I see these as some cheap SHTF aids...

SR22 this morning 25 yards. Fiber optic laser, standard barometric pressure and a little luck maybe. Yeah, maybe...
