At a LGS, run by good friends, I looked at a 1924 Ithaca Side By Side 12 ga with an English stock (straight). It is a consignment gun, and the store owner said he could knock off $25. I took it apart to check out the stampings inside the receiver. There is an "F" with "16" underneath... it's a Field Grade 16 ga!
So, instead of purchasing it without saying anything, I told the store owner what I discovered. He tried to drop a 12 ga shell in the chamber, and when that didn't work he called the consignee and reported the finding. The book lists the Field Grade 16 as worth $200 more. Since I had already been given a price, they did not know what to do. I said, raise the price and put it back on the rack. If it doesn't sell in a while, I'll be back to make an offer.
I'll bet you a bran' new penny no one will want that ol' thang, an' I'll have to rescue it in a week or two!
